Riordan can't even play for free.

Don't think he signed a pre contract with the unwashed while a hibs player, might be wrong.

his contract was the last of a 'mid-season' type contract

Sauzee gave him a 5 year contract in 2001, and he signed a pre-con with the SDBs in May 2006, but wasn't due to be released until October and wouldn't be able to play for them until jan 07. They gave us 170K to release him early and he made his first appearance for them against KilmarHuns at the start of season 06-07

I was pretty close then. Just remembered my disappointment at the pre contract deal, and Hibs 'pulling' a deal which had been offered but not signed.
Or something like that.

Peach of a goal aswell... (3rd one) :thumbgrin

iirc (and I likely don't) it was about backdating the contract offer to the start of the season: Riordan, Willie McKay or some combination thereof wanted a sweetener upfront and Hibs/Petrie basically thought that was shite and wasnae happening. Which I have some sympathy with, despite the outcome

the backdating was in Mowbrays first season.

DR had already agreed a contract whilst Boaby was in charge, but as he was leaving at the end of the season it was put on the back burner whilst a new manager was put in place.
Once TM came in he advised DR to leave it on the table and, if he produced the goods, he would get him a better contract.
Deek duly obliged, and ended the season as top goalscorer with 23 goals. When they went back to the table, the 'new deal' on offer was the same one.

So Deek asked for it to be backdated to when he originally agreed to sign it, the year before.

Petrie refused.

McKay was never involved. Jim McArthur was Deeks agent at that time.

Petrie being a tightwad.
Mowbray being a ****.
I hadn't realised Deek had been advised by his Manager not to sign. Frankly I'd put Mowbray in the frame for fucking it all up.
And for Zibi.

advised/intimated/whispered in his lug.

Mowbrays intentions were probably honourable, but he had only just started working for Petrie, so wouldn't have known what kind of a cun't he is

I think you're being pretty charitable there. Pretty sure Petrie has always been a canute - and Mowbray would know that more than likely. But even if he didn't, and Petrie just over-ruled him he should have backed his player.
However, Mowbray showed his true colours when he got a chance of baling for money (which is no big deal, most in the football industry are purely money motivated with fcukall loyalty to any badge/club/fans) but even more so when he did that stupid huddle at ER and made ridiculous accusations of GBH when McCheaty got rightly carded and sent off for a pathetic dive.
The Deek fiasco was simply that. A fiasco.

I don't agree with Deek's actions - but to be fair to the guy, having been shafted (figuratively) by Rodders and completely abandoned by his immediate boss and mentor, who can blame him for wanting to leave and sticking two fingers up to Hibs in the process.

Of the three key figures, Deek comes out of this with least shame I'd say.

He'd sussed it two years later when he was moaning about not being given any money to replace him.

According to Sky Sports...

According to Sky Sports Deeks away ti East Fife. Probably says it all but could have been worse. I genuinely feel sorry for the boy; he bordered on genius at times. Maybe it was lack of mentoring who knows....
