Unfortunately, I have recently discovered from Benfica's website, John Rankin is leaving Hibs to join up with the squad at the Stadium of Light.
Although the reliability of the source is quite strong, the limited amount of information and any confirmation from either club suggests the rumour is untrue.
The midfielder may be squiggling his way out of Easter Road before the end of the transfer window, after claims that he has attained a following from their large support after his opening goal in a 2-0 win against Celtic.
Sporting Lisboa e Benfica are well-known for their large support with over 171,000 paying club members, the largest in the world. They came 3rd place respectively last season and with such star-players as Luiso and Aimar, the move may be too good to resist for the 26 year-old.
