Pot holes and general state of the roads

So as bad luck would have it my car suffered what can only be described as a major oil haemorrhage yesterday which resulted in my engine being kaput. This happened at the Shore driving west bound towards Henderson street. The road outside Mimi's bakehouse has quite a dip with an exposed drain which i'm guessing is responsible for clipping the sump on my car. I didn't notice anything was wrong until i got back in the car after picking medications up at Boots in the Kirkgate. Between me getting my bits and pieces and returning to the car was time enough for the engine to completely drain of oil which i was unaware of when i started the car. The car is that bit older but i only had the timing belt done eight months ago along with a new starter motor and alternator. Coincidentally the state of Edinburgh's roads was highlighted in the news yesterday. My question is has anyone had similar happen and have you successfully claimed from the council or is it a case i should accept the money being offered from the local scrappy?

I've never had to claim but know a few folk who have been successful.

In your position I'd definitely make a claim, download a form on the council website. If you're unsuccessful appeal.

Get round to where it happened and take loads of photos. You might even get photos of oil on the road if it was that bad.

Apologies for the image size. It's the dip which has done it. Given its mostly buses that travel on that road it's no wonder it's wrecked.

The state of the roads in the UK in general is terrible.
Every road/ street has problems. Bloody car killers some of them.

My laddie hit a sunken drain in the dark a couple of months ago causing his front tyre to burst. £120 for a new tyre.
Contacted the council and their criteria is that if the road damage hasn’t been reported to them then they wash their hands of any claim. They don’t tell you if it’s been reported previously. They then have 24 hours to repair the roadway once it’s been reported ‘in writing or via their website’.
Basically, it’s their corporate method of telling you to fuck off, your getting no compensation.

You should try riding a bike.Gone over my handlebars more than once hitting a pothole. The thing is like the AA guy was saying there needs to be comprehensive road resurfing right across Britain which will cost billions but hey it will be argued it's far better to have nuclear warheads.

I totally agree with you but it does beg the question, wtf is our road tax spent on, if (clearly) not the roads?
