Portugal - government topples

PORTUGAL'S new government has been toppled just two weeks into its term after its policy proposals were sensationally rejected. Socialist and communist groups forged an alliance to oust the centre-right group from power today. After rejecting the government's austerity-led proposals the defeat brought about an automatic resignation. Socialist Party leader Antonio Costa is expected to become leader in the coming weeks, supported by radical left-wingers the Communist Party and Left Bloc. The alliance will now look to reverse austerity measures such as cuts in pay, pensions and public services.

Wonder how they will pay for it.

Everyone knows that austerity is the only way.

The UK government has tried austerity for the past 6/7 years and it has been proven not to work. National debt is higher then ever, unemployment is higher(if you take out the people who have 'vanished' and the zero-hours contracts, poverty and homelessness is worse, industry is crumbling and we are on the brink of an international crisis. The way out is mass nationalisation, a planned economy and huge investment in infrastructure. Sadly I think the new Portuguese government will bottle it, like happened in Greece. There are parallels now in the UK, where Corbyn is already backing down on similar promises and that's even before he's in power! It goes to prove you just cannot reform capitalism. I wish the Portuguese well but let's see....

jock I really wonder what you mean with these sort of posts and how you actually experience the world, because it really does seem that your views are formed on something other than what is actually going on.

The thing is, we haven't had austerity in the uk, while our economy is faring among the best in the developed world, unemployment is falling, income inequality has shrunk albeit a little bit. Meanwhile the countries that follow what I imagine would be more like your prescription reliably go bust, necessitating actual austerity.

Now, the whole thing is a bogey and in time the game will well and truly be up - due mainly to the social revolution of the last half century. But as things stand and within that context, Britain is doing pretty well.
