Politicians from other parties you respect

I know there's a tendency to reflexively deride politicians from other parties. But I thought it might be interesting to get views on politicians you didn't agree with but could admire as well. Maybe not one for @EH17 Jimmy.

I'll start off. I though Rishi Sunak was a decent sort and he certainly didn't need the money. But wrong time wrong place for him.

I think Salmond, flawed as he was, excelled at what he did. It would be daft not to acknowledge how he built the SNP into what they are today.

I didn't agree with him over Megrahi, but Kenny McAskill always came over as thoughtful, hard working and committed.

I was talking to someone recently who had dealings with Kate Forbes and found her very impressive on professional and personal level. It's a shame there wasn't room for her.

Jim Wallace as an old school Lib Dem always came across as a capable, decent sort.

I'm sure others will come to mind. Thoughts?

I can honestly say there isn't a single politician from any party I respect.
Frankly I'm amazed anyone respects ANY of the greedy, lying, self serving *&*^.

Maybe my life would be better living in cloud cuckoo land with you Archie - but I just can't lie to myself enough to get there.

I guess my starting point is to try and judge people as they are. But each to their own.

I’ve met a few politicians through my professional and personal life.
Tam Dalyell
Michael Connarty
Margaret Thatcher
Fiona Hyslop
Angela Constance
Pauline Stafford
Numerous local councillors.
All of them perfectly pleasant and amenable to conversation on a level - no fawning or star struck from me.
The one politician I met who went out of their way to talk to me and my colleagues to ensure we were being treated well and looked after was Dr. Jack Cunningham a high profile Labour MP. That’s all it took for him to make the impression of a decent person. It stands out because to John Major and all the others present I might as well have been invisible.

Apologies if my post read like I was having a go at you.

I was actually having a go at the politicians - all of whom I also judge as I see them - and of all the ones I've seen there's not a decent, honourable one amongst them.

I'm not a political fanboy, I don't closely follow the daily shenanigans of Holyrood or Westminster. I don't watch PMQs or watch Question Time - but it's still hard to avoid the actions of the well known lying wankers from all parties.

That's the ones I see - and that's how I see them.

Sunaks smoke free generation could be an incredible step forward and probably also a workable way to end cigarette sales, and possibly vape sales too.

Thanks for the follow up.
