That sounded like a good competitive game, Poland made a game of it, the Dutch have a number of things to work on, defence and set pieces not great. Overall, sounded like the Dutch deserved it.
Poland did well, missed levandoski, Dutch struggled to score with the amount of chances they had, bringing on Weghorst saved them from only coming away with a draw. That sounded like a good competitive game, Poland made a game of it, the Dutch have a number of things to work on, defence and set pieces not great. Aye.Poland did well, missed levandoski, Dutch struggled to score with the amount of chances they had, bringing on Weghorst saved them from only coming away with a draw.
Especially with the quality of Gakpo and Memphis.Holland were a tad worse than I expected and Poland a bit better, so a much closer game as a result.
I must be getting a bit Dutch tho cos I didn't doubt they would get the winner eventually. Didn't think the carthorse Weghorst would get it tho!
Especially with the quality of Gakpo and Memphis.
I'm confused. Are Holland and the Netherlands interchangeable terms? I thought it was akin to calling Britain England?Holland were a tad worse than I expected and Poland a bit better, so a much closer game as a result.

I’m sure Holland is part of the netherlandsI'm confused. Are Holland and the Netherlands interchangeable terms? I thought it was akin to calling Britain England?
May be talking nonsense. Wouldn't be the first time.

Cheers mateIn English, Holland and the Netherlands are equivalent.
In Dutch, the name for the country is Nederland, all here agree on that.
Holland was an old duchy and just a part of the Netherlands to the north and west of the country. It is now two provinces, North- and South Holland.
People from the big towns north of the big rivers Maas and Rhine often use the Dutch word Holland to refer to the whole Netherlands - but folk in the south and east of the country might take exception to that in the same way Scots will take exception to GB being called England.
Has any country in the world always been one sovereign country? No. The Kingom of the Netherlands included Belgium a coupla centuries ago (The Low Countries) but protestant Calvinists were more prevalent in the north (incl the aforementioned duchy of Holland) whilst in general the south was more French and therefore Catholic in its political and religious dealings.Cheers mate
But has it always been the 1 sovereign country?
If so is a world of difference to GB being called England… not sniping at you, just curious to know the origins
I wasn’t having a go at you. I was just curious.Has any country in the world always been one sovereign country? You are right that the situation is different from UK. Try reading a but more on the history and tell me what you think?
Nae probs, it's too complicated for me but can a sovereign country be in a union? Doesn't sovereign mean having your own laws, fiscality and borders?I wasn’t having a go at you. I was just curious.
In regards to GB, Scotland was a country 200 years before England. The 9th century Scotland became a country and has been a sovereign country ever since.
Just saying.
The union of the crowns in 1609 (i think)
The union of parliament 1707.
We have our own laws, borders and fiscalityNae probs, it's too complicated for me but can a sovereign country be in a union? Doesn't sovereign mean having your own laws, fiscality and borders?
If so, the duchy of Holland was gifted to a certain duke from Orange in France, iirc, so never attained the status of country, never mind sovereign. The medieval Germanic world was rife with a million wee principalities with local hard men mistrusting each other. Took yonks to sort out![]()
