Okay, so, Scotland got whooped by two in Peru.

Stevenson, McGinn and McGeouch all started the match (Lewis completed it) which was nice but, beyond that, I'm not convinced there's a lot to say about it. They all did well, but the reality is that it was a laughably disjointed Scotland team that we can't really make any judgements about whatsoever. Which is just as well, because we didn't get a single shot on target and gave up the ball over two thirds of the time.

And as great as it was to see Lewis get a Scotland cap, the reality is that he's never going to shift either Robertson or Tierney from the left-back role... So why did he play? He doesn't have a future at international level.

Honestly, I just don't get it. It doesn't make any sense. Neither the appointment of McLeish, nor this string of pointless friendlies, has any real justification. We're doing it, because we're doing it.

Or is it just me?

Lewy played to allow Tierney to have a break and Robertson to focus on his Champions League exploits. I think Eck's selection was well intentioned, but Lewy is so far down the pecking order.

I think Tierney is over-rated. Lewy is a very different left back but I don't think he is that far off Tierney. Robertson I like.

It's a great experience and brilliant exposure. Certainly captures the imagination playing in South America. I know I was interested more than a trip to Norway or Eastern Europe.

However, the timing of it and squad available has to be questioned. First game and the intent really looked like we were attempting a 0-0. I know our attacking options are honking in that squad but we must be aiming for better than that. We did ok until the goalkeeping blunder but be bolder and braver to do better.

If rumours are true that some of the squad, Stevenson included, have been sent home after the first game as that's all they would be in contention for, then that really is piss poor management. The squad should take in the trip together regardless of game plans and future selection.

Then what was the point? If you're building a squad to make it to Euro 2020, then why play friendlies that don't build toward that outcome?

It's flabbergasting.

Fair observations, and I get that a trip to south America is more enticing than the Russian peninsula.

I just don't see the desired intent.

What were we, as a national team, trying to achieve by going to south America with a knitted up squad that lacks an international future in many cases?

Just don't get it.

Really hope that's not true. Can't think of any upside to doing that, only negatives.

I saw it rumoured that the team doctor didnt think players could play that match (at altitude/heat) and manage a recovery and adjustment for another match on saturday.... could all easily be bullshit

Which is fine, but to pack them off after instead of keeping some sort of bond going seems to be shan patter. But should be expect any less from GJP?

Apparently GJP had done a deal with Lewis that he would only play the first game and could then go home. Maybe he wanted to get a holiday with family before season kicks off again.

Scotland have to play friendly matches as we have no competitive game till September. It's the location of these games and the timing which makes no sense whatsoever. The players are knackered at the end of a long hard demanding season and they are immediately taken off to South America with the humidity and hot climate that entails at this time of year to play two decent international teams fine tuning themselves for the World Cup. It was no wonder there were so many call-offs and some players are being sent home after one game. I strongly suspect there was some sort of financial incentive to the SFA to get Scotland to play these games. McLeish would have had no say in it whatsoever as they were arranged long before he was appointed.

As we get nearer to September McLeish has to get his final squad ready and it is vital that he has a first choice eleven decided upon some time before the first match. He is hampered as all Scotland managers are by a dearth of international class Scottish players to choose from particularly in central defence and up front but he has to somehow make the best of what he has been given and get them organised and ready to win the qualifying group matches. I think Dylan and SJM will be regulars in the squad from now on and both will play quite regularly. Lewis Stevenson unfortunately has two top class left-backs in front of him, but I was pleased to see him get a deserved cap last night.

I see we dropped down 8 places to 42nd place thanks to these defeats. The biggest drop in the top 50. After that, only Curacao ( A Dutch Caribbean island with a population of 160k) dropped more places than us in the whole world. They dropped 10 to take them to 81st.

We are run by fuckin self serving eejits. [emoji53]
