Not a twitcher, at least not a hard practicing one.I've dabbled. But I spotted a bird I have never noticed in Edinburgh before.I was on the bus going along Ferry Rd. at the time and happened to look into the Rugby fields and there I noticed this bird.It is what I'd say is middle sized, it has an extremely long beak and quite long legs.It had light brown plumage speckled with white. Not knowing enough I thought is that a pewit? But I thought they hung about the shore?Where is Bill Oddies Beard when you need him?

Given where you saw it possibly a sandpiper?

Og Young Ornithologist.

if it was in the gutter then it was a snipe, and if it was not allowed out between dusk and dawn, it was a curlew. I think... :53:

Curlew is the national bird of NL. Used to be on the front of the old 100 guilder note.

I suggest it may be a Sandpiper as someone has already mentioned. It has a long beak, inhabits the shorelines and speckled. The curlew has an extra long beak. On the other hand it may be an Emu. ?

If the rugby pitch was waterlogged it could have been a Herron.

Trouble we have here with helping with an identification is knowing where Moaty was at the time.Remember the Perth trip?He was maybe on the wrong bus! It could very well have been a banty hen he's spotted in a field in Wiltshire

The snipe I've seen have been really small and I think tend to live in marshland.

Don't think the free bus pass gets you as far as Wiltshire but if anyone could wangle it he could.
As far as being on the wrong bus he may take issue with that one. :happy-1:

I live in North Edinburgh and curlews are regular visitors to the fields in the area. It is all a question of timing. As wading birds they spend most of their time using their long beaks to dig in the sand for food. However, around high tide, when the sand is covered by the sea, they wander the local fields looking for worms.

Wasnae a heron, not big enough and I know what they look like because I've seen them down the water of leith.

A big one was often spotted around here , it would 've sent you it's photo for clarification ( wouldn't be the first time)

A big one spotted in Fife?
Probably some sort of rash.

I’m not saying it was definitely venereal.

Not definitely.

Your photo of Sir David’s moment takes pride of place on my wall. Definitely a first one.

Heron's are quite tall and these birds were much closer to the ground , plus herons tend to be singular and grey in colour, these were in a pack of about 7 and were what you'd say was brown and light brown plummage.

Could it have been a heron that was squatting or sitting down?

Or a baby one?

Still no word from Bill Oddies Beard.I wonder if he's put his fatballs out in his back gairden?
