Naz Shah vs Carmichael vs SNP MPs

I notice calls for Naz Shahs expulsion? these sorts of thing will happen time and time again.

Carmichael survives on a technicality...while various snp mps have been suspended since last may.

should the electorate have the power of recall? if not why not? if so where should the line be drawn - if there even is a line.

I like the idea of the power of recall but struggle to think where the line should be drawn.

I think it's important to point out the SNP members were suspended by their party not by parliament.

Yes I think there should be the power of recall but like you struggle with a line.

Too low, say under 200 constituents, and it would be all too easy for a decent local opposition party to muster support and fire them off at every defeat. Unless it's something even more outrageous than fiddling their expenses, subverting the course of justice or shagging dead animals I doubt you'd get more than the 200 plus another couple of hundred non party activists to put their name to anything. That number just seems ridiculously low.

I do however think that members and lords should automatically get the boot if found guilty of many more offences than they are just now where I think they need to be jailed to loose their seats and even then for Lords it's not automatic.

I'm surprised at the comparison. I think the far more pertinent issue is the migration - over the lifespan of this forum, and commented on all along the way - of contemporary anti semitism from the neo nazi left to the Marxist far left and increasingly into the centre left. That this is not taken sufficiently seriously even yet, is IMHO evidenced by the comparison of political chicanery, however shan, and this latest demonstration of the trend. Whatever should gave happened to Carmichael I would be surprised if his case was considered equivalent to a political exhibiting racism against black people.

If anything this is more serious than that - the Labour Party is emerging as infested at all levels, from student poltics to the PLP, with the foul tropes of the far left - and against a wider backdrop where Jews are once more fleeing parts of Europe in large part connected to agitation by continental Europe's equivalents. There are few more important issues for the contemporary centre left and whether Carmichael should have been telt to bolt or not, is not equivalent to this.

I have read this over and over again and am convinced that it is the ultimate EGB post. I have no idea what you are saying. That probably makes me a Stalinist or something.

Also - "house!" I think all the usual suspects have been mentioned in a single post.

Once more, minus the beer:

I don't think Carmichael's offence compares to Shah's. On one hand we have political mud slinging, on the other we have anti semitism. The rise of the latter is a far more serious issue than political parties scrapping and I'm surprised to see the two compared. Over the years we have posted on this forum, reborn anti semitism has gone from something found among neo Nazis to something that's all over the mainstream centre left.

In fact it's now so mainstream that people are blunted to it and so this comparison is possible. I would be surprised to find Carmichael treated as comparable to someone making racist statements about black people and yet the comparison is made here with an anti Semite.

....but neither will be recalled. Shah or Carmichael....irrespective of whether their actual or perceived crimes are equal or not.
