Last night there was a disturbance outside the Marksman on Duke Street. The bus i was on had to stop because there were guys squaring up to each in the road outside the pub. I know the venue clientelle is pretty choice at the best of times, but pretty scary still.

I've seen melees outside that pub at all sorts of times of the day!

Was there not a firearms incident there not so long ago? That might have been at breakfast time!!

Didn't see the melee but no surprise it happened where it happened. To be honest Duke Street at the best of times is best avoided. Hell of a place. Bad enough during the day but I can only imagine what it must be like around closing times at the week-ends.

I was in Duke St after the Hamilton game. The Golf Tavern has now turned all hipster and trendy full of posh lads and lassies.
If any of them had wandered along to the Marksman they could have joined in the celebrations at some blokes coming out party....that's coming out after a stint in the big hoose as opposed to embracing his sexuality.

This is where I regularly get the bus home from the Kirkgate because I can get a 25,21 or 49 and between that and the Duke's Heid they are two of the pubs in that area I would never venture into. Some of the conversations you here at the bus stop are choice. If you want to here about shop lifting sprees at Fort Kinnaird or who battered who then it's the place to go.

I too get the 25 or 21 most days whether shopping in Junction Street, the Kirkgate or Tesco. The need to attend the splendid barbers in both the Kirkgate and Duke Street is no longer necessary.
I have had a quick one in The Foot of the Walk, The Marksman, The Duke's Head or the Central depending on when buses are due.
Never felt intimidated and invariably bump into someone I know, even vaguely. Maybe I am just thick skinned. ' Duke Street the Bronx', I think not.

I think the impression folk have of Duke Street is exaggerated. I probably wouldn't drink in either the marksman or the dukes head, but know quite a few regulars and they're just normal working class folk on the whole. You do find the non regulars out on a bender looking for an early opener cause the most bother, usually don't recognise them as being locals.
I like how there's a couple of 'trendy' bars there too. Not a fan of the Lioness tbh (owned by a jambo) but the new version of the golf tavern is nice enough, specialising is Scottish produce and owned by a Hibby, good lad...handy pre match if you just fancy a quietish pint.
