Marink Reedijk Appointed Manager of Hibernian FC

How many games you giving him?

To get a point on the board? Five or six games, and he’s already lost the easiest two of this current run against Dundee Utd and Falkirk. Needs to get a win in his first seven or eight, and frankly that’s generous given we’re bottom of the league.

Only going to get harder the longer it goes, with Celtic, St Mirren, Hearts and Aberdeen all up next. If we’ve still not picked up a point after five league games, how long can that continue? After those games it’s Dundee Utd again, followed by Dundee and Motherwell to round out November.

His job is to get results, there’s not even been an upturn in performances.

Sadly I’m not surprised, a rookie wasn’t what we needed. Can only hope he finds some way of getting some confidence into this squad or we’re fucked.

Manager will need to learn very quickly and flex his beliefs and learn how to grind out results. Based on the squad we have, the target for me is finish tenth .
We have lost the most games in the league and lowest scores in the league.

We are firmly relegation material.

Also, need a very good January window. No faith in Malkay and his recruitment team to deliver that.

Going to be a massive rebuild in the summer, hopefully, Malkay, Marshall and Stewart aren’t still employed with us.
Agree with all of that. However, how many years have we to keep saying massive rebuild in the summer.
I’m sick hearing it. Then nothing happens.

As a result of Bosman in 1992, every club will have a big rebuild of sorts every summer.
You have a combination of players out of contract, loanees going back, players retiring, and players being sold for transfer fees.
The key to successful recruitment is to bring in players who are better than what you have already, and better than what has gone.
This is where Hibs have spectacularly failed in the last few years, and the main reason we are where we are now.
I would also add the complete and utter failure of the youth academy so far to bring through anything like sufficient young players strong enough and talented enough
to play in the Hibs first team.

So, with the above in mind we do have a big rebuild next summer, and assuming Reedijk is still the manager, it will be very much his team next season.
Reason being we have quite a number of players coming to the end of their contracts and a few loanees.
I also expect possibly Grant Hanley to retire, and for Hibs to sell either or both of Miguel Chaiwa and Josh Mulligan.
My philosophy on recruitment would always be if say eight players are going in the summer, you bring in four permanent quality first choice players for key positions
who are better than what you have and what has just left, then promote four from the youth academy.
Unrealistic maybe, but that's my thoughts

Sounds like a plan to me. Only caveat, we need a decent scouting/recruitment team. I have no faith in MM or GS

Why?

Firstly, he has to get some positive results between now and the January window opening. Can’t simply write things off until then.

Secondly, the manager doesn’t sign the players, Malky does, so not sure what’ll really change in terms of calibre of player available.

Or properly backed in the summer to have a better go at things.

None of the summer signings look up to much, regardless of who the manager is.

That said, a coach like Reedijk doesn’t seem like the right type for a mid-season appointment. An experienced head would have been better to stabilise things, yet another thing the Gordon’s have never learned despite trying this with Maloney and Montgomery. Can only hope it works this time, but I’ve little confidence.
Maloney, Montgomery and Gray

Likely to be an unpopular opinion but here goes.
I think Reedijk needs to just go back to playing the same system David Gray had from now till the end of the season.
His aim from now till then should be just to get more out of what he has.
Avoiding relegation is his sole objective from now till May 2027.

The reason I say this is that he has inherited a squad of players put together for David Gray.
They have been brought to the club to play the system and set-up of the previous manager.
I see no value or point in tinkering and changing with the squad and the line ups now.
The time for experiments is over.
Everything can change next summer hopefully when we have secured our top flight status.

The time for wholesale changes in managers, tactics, and direction was at the end of last season and into the summer.
That time is past now, and we are in the serious business of trying to win football matches.
We have to deal with the here and now and not dwell on past errors, or as some seem to want to do, play the blame game.
It's all about points from hereon in, and we need to pull together, get back to basics, and salvage at least some pride for the season.
We are in a relegation dogfight, of that I have no doubt.
The club now needs to come to terms with that, and instil some togetherness, unity, and fight to get ourselves out of this mess.

Gray wasn’t a mid-season appointment. But overall the only experienced manager they’ve appointed is Lee Johnson… madness.
Thing is who really were the experienced managers that Hibs could have realistically hired ?
Looking around, every one of them would have been divisive.

Neil Lennon; a former manager who fell out with the club. I rate Neil as a manager and he done a good job when at Hibs in that he got us out of the Championship.
However he always gave you the impression he thought he was bigger than Hibs, and he just hung on till the Celtic job became availabe again.

Stephen Robinson; Already away to Aberdeen.

Jim Goodwin: Imagine how his appointment would have been received by the Hibs support ?

Pressley; See above.

No matter who we had got, many would have been unhappy and be dead against it.
Bringing in a young manager from abroad means he has a clean slate.
It's also clearly the management structure the hierarchy at the club want.
However it's brave and a huge risk.
Coming in mid-season means it's an even bigger risk.

We just have to pull together now and try and salvage something from the season...IE safety.

By experienced I didn’t mean going for a familiar face in Scottish football, although if we were looking around Scotland then Valaraki would have been the best of the bunch.

Looking abroad is fine, but I felt that we needed an experience head to get the players on side and steady the ship. We could have looked for a manager with at least three seasons top flight experience under their belt, and with experience of coming in midsession to galvanise a toiling squad.

The new manager is a bright innovative coach. Unfortunately he's been brought into an archaic structure that'll choke him.
Plus a pool of players, who mostly, won’t be able to enact the new tactic(s) he is trying to get across to them. I’ve no real idea what skills,as a manager, he is bringing into Easter Road, but already he is beginning to look like someone who cannot adapt his approach to what he has available to work with.
I think you need fairly skilful, intelligent players to quickly adapt. Don’t think we have many of them - if any.

I'd imagine very few experienced proven manager accepts the Hibs job in the current structure.

Most clubs operate under a director of football nowadays. Any manager wanting a job anywhere has to accept that.

It's not the structure, it's the personnel and the players not having any cohesion. We've a pool of players who are probably all decent individuals but there's not a team. We lack any individual quality that can make up for the deficiencies.

but already he is beginning to look like someone who cannot adapt his approach to what he has available to work with.

He's not had a chance to adapt yet.
He has to come in and try put his things across, then study see and see where that goes wrong. That's gonna take games to learn those lessons.

I think the players have a mental block over any real technical issues. Except for up front, where we lack genuine quality.

Modern day footballers should have enough knowledge of different systems and be able to adapt to the new man’s tactics within a reasonable time. What’s annoying me as much as anything else is that the absolute basics like passing to a team mate seem to have disappeared. It’s not as if he’s asking them to play with blindfolds on. No doubt the injury list has hampered him but I suspect the alleged extra day’s training has caused a few dummies to be spat out.

The first goal on saturday being a great example , amateur basics

Correct!

Had the players taking extra training sessions, wonder how long until the players take a huff, some rumours already of certain players unhappy.

Imagine if the supporters were unhappy and took the huff? Hmmm! There's a thought.Get rid of any unhappy players if that's the case
