Van Basten is easily my favourite striker of all time....a centre-forward without any weakness whatsoever to his game. He had pace, athleticism, movement, awareness, skill, heading power, and phenomenal finishing ability with both feet. He could score goals at any level for any team he played for. Brilliant goals, tap-ins, headers etc...the guy was the most complete striker of my lifetime.

Marco Van Basten IMO deserves to be mentioned alongside Pele, Maradona, and Cruyff. The tragedy is that the only way defenders could stiop him was inficting injury on him, and it was a huge loss to the game that he had to quit the football so early with ankle damage.

Elegance personified on a football pitch.

The over head kick at 5:40 on that clip was one of a 'proper' hat-trick he scored that night, I was watching that game in my mates house and when he scored it we all stood up and laughed at how good he was. That Milan team was outstanding too, with the trio of dutch players supplemented by donadoni,Baresi etc.A terrific team when Italian football was brilliant.

Yeah, basically he had the technique and touch of Bergkamp, but was more of a pure striker. That Dutch 88 team was something else.
