So again The Council are doing shit to LW that's probably not required and will no doubt be scrapped sometime next year when they announce the tram is eventually coming down ( hurrah!)

Here's a wee video explaining how cyclists will have to navigate the changes. I predict that most cyclists won't bother their arse with either of these and that any cyclist that does will get abuse from pedestrians for cycling on the pavement. Honestly, what a load of nonsense and a waste of time and money. The turn right one; why not just let the bike green light go first for maybe 5 seconds and allow cyclists to, I dunno, turn right?

Could they make it any more complicated? I can't imagine any cyclist giving this consideration. The cycling behind the bus might make sense if there wasn't the ever present danger of getting in to an argument with a pedestrian but that staggered right turn nonsense just beggars belief.

It kind of makes you wonder about the thought process behind it. The proposals for Picardy Place reflect this too.

Couple of beauties there!

Don't know about cyclists in Edinburgh, but getting some of them here to use a cycle path next to the main road is more than many seem to be able to take in.
How they're expected to use the likes of the double right turn, fuck knows?

The right turn is very similar to an equivalent turn in Spain on some/all busy country roads. It works and saves lives - well until some foreigner pulls up to turn right in the outside lane and Jose rams his ass at high speed!

I can see the lycra cyclist doing the bus stop thing. They're so well behaved and always follow the rules!

I swear as I stand outside the Harp having a fag there's more cyclists on the pavement than there are in the cycle lanes.

Anyway. Never mind the cyclists (is this a LW or cycle thread?).

Where is the space for trams, bus lanes, car lanes, cycle lanes and pavements on LW?

Are all these "improvements" going to get ripped up for the iron horse?

The cycle lanes on Leith Walk are a bit of a joke tbh. Cars constantly doubled parked meaning cyclists have to move out into the road and back in again, not an issue for most cyclists, but off putting for some.

I spent a fair bit of time in Sweden about 15 years ago and they kinda had the double turn thing going on. Worked well. Thing is they had it as a uniform policy everywhere rather than a random crossing. Also they pretty much had proper dedicated cycle lanes everywhere. Very valid points about double parked cars, pedestrians not using the zebra crossing points, and cyclists not sticking to cycle lanes. In other words, folk are selfish, lazy and greedy so it won't work.

Bit chaotic at times but the bike lanes here in Holland work fine even THO folk are selfish, lazy and greedy too.

As ER would say, 'Persevere' :)

The main problem is, as others have pointed out, people aren't used to this system. Having it on a single junction in the whole of Edinburgh is bound to fail. Maybe they have plans to expand it wider? In parts of Asia they have this system for all two wheeled transport (scooters, motorcycles etc.) and it works fine.

If they're serious about cycle lanes on Leith Walk they do need to stop people parking in them though.

you've got to try different things to assess if they'll work but, IMO, I think this is a non-starter given it's location (it's not even a black spot). However, is this a future thinking move with a view to trams going down the middle of Leith Walk? ie. making sure two wheels go over at the correct angle.

I would rather the ring-fenced money is went on educating all road users with informative signage/tv adverts etc.

Enjoyed Jack response which was tarring every cyclist with a big fuck off brush. Nice one. :doh

Very good shout.
