A pretty safe prediction is that being able to use a computer really well will be a true benefit for our children in the future.

With that in mind, I've just bought one of these, Raspberry Pi based computer where you build it from scratch and get coding in Java & (more importantly) Python.

Going to let my kids build it tomorrow night. Should be a blast.

Anyone else doing abject geekery like this?

Kano - The Computer anyone can make

Who could argue? It's called feckin' Kano!

I'm trying to get the kids into this sort of thing with little luck. They're never off the iPads but seem disinterested in what goes on beneath the bonnet. It's a strangely pervasive phenomenon - having been involved in IT recruitment now and again it's a pretty typical view for youngsters these days.

I shall persevere and I think you're doing the right thing.

Do they like Minecraft? This OS has the building blocks and tutorials in coding Minecraft. And stuff like Pong etc.

Raspberry Pi's are great. The Kano looks really good for kids, the DIY ethos kind of reminds me of the ZX Spectrum back in the day.

They're great for cheap, geeky projects. The creative team in my work created something called Kiltman. They hooked a Raspberry Pi up to a camera and the internet and hid it underneath a kilt on dummy legs. When you looked under the kilt it took your picture and posted it on Twitter.

Was about 92 for the Kano kit. You'll need a monitor with HDMI connector but you can use the telly or any other monitor you already have if you want.

I got a dell pretty cheap off Amazon.
