Just Back and the more things change the more things stay the same

Thought we were great for the first fifteen mins. We know what we are trying to do at least. Players just need a bit of confidence and hard work, and we need some patience. We'll do ok this season

Granted it wasn't great and it seems a good few of our players are currently playing well below par. Actually that was one of these games where the whole team were poor, (Malky 😡) but we saw, albeit briefly, a different Hibs. As fitness improves and the new coaching sinks in things will improve.
In Marink I trust 😉
I thought Ivesic looked the part, calm on the ball and looking to move it forward. His central defensive partner, however, doesn’t look like half the player I thought he was - strolling up the park just to give the ball away etc. First 15 minutes or so we looked like a team with a new-found energy and commitment - I thought Klidje and Chaiwa were showing more desire to get involved and get the ball forward. Then the basic errors crept in. Mulligan seems to take a nose bleed every time he gets forward, Suto’s first touch was shocking and Elding was trying to help our defence. The raw materials are there but Marink is going to need some time (and help from MM&Co) to get his show on the road. A couple more performances like that and we could be propping up the league so hopefully Marink got a good insight yesterday and knows what’s needed.

I hate to say it but Goodwin has got that team playing well - particularly when attacking as they did with two players (I forget who) down the left always moving forwards and passing between them to overload Passlack who had a bit of a torrid time. He was raging with his teammates at one point

Been away so apart from getting the FT score no idea what happened yesterday. Fuck me this thread is a depressing read.

I dont think we have a choice. Ian Gordon has got to balance out the cost of relegation against the expense of increasing the transfer budget.
Ian Gordon should be balancing the cost of European football or no European football!

Sooner or later, sooner hopefully, he's going to see right through Malky and kick his ass out of Easter Road. Running up club debt on players that just don't fit together after all the supposed scouting and background checks is a disgrace. He's failing. He's failed.

I think he’s still too scared to stand on his own two feet so leans on grifters like MM and Ben Kensell. He needs to get his big boy pants on though, he’s served his apprenticeship so should know what shite looks like by now.

Re: fitness and coaching
The doc has got them in 6days a week (chef not a happy bunny) so he’s on it in regards to how unfit they are

“The more it changes, the more it is the same thing.”

Just Back, Dundee United Away

Day started with a 9:30 train to catch the West of Scotland Hibs bus at 11am at the Station Bar. From there we reached the excellent taxi club Dundee at 1:30 for a pie and refreshments and down to Tannadice to take our seats at the front of Fair Play Shelf at Tannadice. Some effort to build a stand with so many restricted view seats. Top Effort. Pleasant surprise as @Gunnerhibby came to sit next to us, haven’t seen him in a while.

Team news filtered out, and I suppose the talking point was that our new signing Ivezic had recovered from illness but still none the wiser how we would line up come the game.

Before I move onto the game the formation was I thought something along the lines of 4-1-3-2

Sallinger

Passlack Ivezic Kerr Irreale

Chaiwa

Elding Mulligan Klidge

Wright
Suto

I wouldn’t get too bogged down in that though, because there were a lot of nuances in what we did in and out of possession; for example Passlack and later Cadden were often much higher than you would expect in a straight four at the back. Counterbalanced by Klidge and Elding often being the ones getting back to our byeline to cover the United attacks down the wings - but there were more examples.

So game kicked off, notable point that were in all green. Wonder what the thinking was there.

These notes are done from being at the game - Ive not read the match thread or looked at the TV highlights.

And we started okay, we looked comfortable and we moved the ball about well. In around 10 minutes we had a great chance when Suto had a good run and worked the ball over to Mulligan who could have done better with his attempted finish. Soon after Klidge had a good run and shot that might have caused the keeper more problems.

Almost straight afterwards the first warning sings when United sliced straight through our defence and Sallinger was forced to make a smart save to keep us level. Our new Serbian defender was showing up well in defensive covering.

Midway through the half Chaiwa had a shot blocked followed by a Mulligan shot that didn’t trouble the goalkeeper. Soon afterwards again Sallinger saved the day when we were sliced through the middle. Chaiwa then picked up a needless yellow, and his influence on the game dwindled as he didn’t put a tackle in until he was subbed later in the game. Also noticeable by this point that we are still kicking goal kicks long. I’d love to know the managers thinking behind that.

The referee was being his usual inconsistent self, leaving the crowd baffled as to what constitutes a foul. Heavy challenges being ignored while minimal contact was being punished.

Dundee United took the lead with around ten minutes left in the first half as we were yep you guessed it carved open again. I’d need to see it on the telly but I thought there was a good case for a foul in the build up for a body check on a Hibs defender. After a check the goal stood though and yet again we conceded the first goal. Goals change games and all that.

I thought at this point, we probably played the better football, had the better players, but they had the better chances. Before half time there were shouts for a Hibs penalty for handball but didnt have a clear view, a Dundee United player was booked for a blatant body check on Suto, and Suto had a great chance to get a shot away on the volley but had a fresh air swipe. The ball burst too. Dogs on the pitch and now burst balls. Back to the 80s.

Half time came and went and there were no subs and no tactical changes too by the looks of it.

The game continued in the same vein as before, Sallinger made another good save right after half time after Passlack was turned inside out. When we do make some progress Suto doesn’t quite find Edling but the game is pulled back for what I think was offside. Didn’t look offside.

Around 50 minutes we made a triple sub replacing our front three. We did seem to get a bit of momentum after this, but without creating any clear cut chances. Matonda looked threatening but we struggled to get him on the ball in threatening positions. Too busy passing about our back line and Dundee United were quite happy for us to have possession 50m from their goal.

We were carved down our left, our right, through the centre but between some good goalkeeping and some good blocks we managed to stop them from scoring again.

The game continued with us having some chances but without anything clear cut, whilst they looked much more threatening with their chances. We weren’t able to build momentum, and struggled to put a good shot away when the chance arises. A lot of bad decisions in possession?

As the game petered out we swapped Devaney for Chaiwa and Cadden for Iredale.

Almost immediately Devaney is sent off for DOGSO after a promising break is turned into a Dundee United attack. Seemed farcical at the time that the foul on Boyle wasn’t considered in the decision but I suppose them the laws. Penalty wasn’t given and thankfully the free kick Dundee United got came to nothing.

Sallinger kept us in the game, but continues to be our main source of giving away possession.

Passlack a strange choice for captain, as usual looks better going forward than defending.

Ivezic looks fine, but wasn’t facing a particularly strong attack today. Bigger challenges ahead.

Kerr struggled to cope with United breaks at pace, but otherwise okay

Iredale can we have the one from last season back please? Can’t see him keeping his place ahead of Mayor or Obita.

Chaiwa was fine up until he got booked, but pretty anonymous afterwards. Nuanced role playing very deep as a one out of possession.

Elding was pretty quiet, but I’m not sure the position he played out wide is really for him

Mulligan see Iredale. Always involved but not having the big moments in a game he had last season.

Klidge had some moments, but not sure he’s a left winger.

Wright another new position, I thought he was pretty ineffective all day.

Suto had some moments but was an easy choice as first sub

Subs
The bomb squad on 55 mins

Boyle for Elding, not particularly effective
Lowe for Suto, not particularly effective
Matondo for Klidge, some promising signs but we didnt get him on the ball enough in the final third

Last ditch with 10 to go

Cadden for Iredale hardly time to make an impact, and he’s not a left back
Devaney for Chaiwa, quite an impact but he was left extremely exposed and made a decision. Dundee Untied forwards were rubbish, they wouldn’t have scored.

The manager - I made a note about 20 mins in - “A few positional tweaks, but nothing radically different to what went before”. It was his first game, and there is a lot of work to be done before he stamps his mark on this squad and team, but if there was anything positive to take from the game yesterday it was he now knows the scale of the task in front of him.

The ref - my pet hate about refs is slowing the game down at every opportunity. Maybe in the old days of blood and thunder Scottish football breaks were good. In the modern era of relentless passing the ball to death, stopping the game needlessly at every opportunity is frustrating to watch. If he’d stopped the game for the foul on Boyle then Devaney wouldn’t have been sent off. Didn’t feel like there was much advantage to Hibs there.

Man of the Match: Easy pick - Sallinger. Top performer on the day by a considerable margin, and he kept us in the game right up to the final whistle.

Thanks to West of Scotland Hibs for an excellent day out - except the football as usuall.

How come Tait got booked for that challenge but play carried on yadda yadda yadda
Really confused the rest is as they say History

First time poster here but long term admirer of the site and especially the just backs..

If the manager didn't understand how big the job he had on his hands then he certainly does now.. Personally I think we are in big trouble at the minute in regards to what he has at his disposal player wise.. Yeh guys like Obita and Mayor will be back soon which will take away a drastically poor Iredale playing out of a position where he looked completely lost. A few injuries and we look very sub-standard.. I feel there will be yet another over haul of the squad with maybe up to 4 or 5 leaving and new faces brought in...

Going forward we looked better and glimpses were on display of what we can perhaps expect in the future..

As for the chaos of what happened after the game with block 7 ,well we have all see the videos..I think they will be getting the book thrown at them and a lengthy ban on the way...

As an aside, does anyone know if Williams is injured, noticed he wasn't even on the bench yesterday?.

The group of players are absolutely garbage. It’s a fact. The recruitment has been a shambles.

Maybe soon there will be more respect towards Sir David Gray, other than the disgraceful comments of the last year or so.

No manager will get a tune out of this lot of rubbish.
If Sir David Grays piss poor game management had not blown the chance of European group stage football twice in the space of 12 months costing the club over 8 million in prize money we might have increased the transfer budget and signed better players

Give it rest man, he’s absolutely fucking pish, 1.5 million striker who couldn’t score in a brothel.

Record signing should be “even half decent”, he should be outstanding. He’s not, because he’s shite, like most of Malky signings.
I'll tell you what, you give it a rest. I'm as entitled to my opinion as you are to yours.

Did Dave tell the forwards to let the gent player get a free header . Did he tell wright to miss a sitter .

Did he tell Megwa to make a stupid mistake against Gent.

That old chestnut Megwa should not have come on in Poland… despite Megwa not at fault for tge goal.

Another issue yesterday was the odd and out of order reaction of B7 at the end of game.

Cannot be acceptable to behave like that

We were on top in both games until Gray made his substitutions, distributed the flow of the team and ultimately cost us twice. Megwa coming on as a sub and making mistakes in both games was an unfortunate coincidence for us all especially for Gray and Megwa himself
