So we made it to the final day of the seaason with something to play for.
Needing a win to take fourth place from Mothwell. Mirrored by the potential disaster awaiting us in the other meaningful fixture today. At least they got the job done.
We barely turned up. Again.

We lined up predictably 3412, with a few changes from the side that was actually getting results.

Sallinger
O'Hora Rocky Obita
Passlack Newell Chaiwa Cadden
McGrath
Boyle Elding
I haven't read anything, watched anything, or even know if there's a reason for any of these changes.
Iredale not playing I expected, he's been rioted against Motherwell.
Why was Campbell dropped? McGrath sold us out in his red card and we've won 2 on the trot with Campbell playing, almost looks like the formation doesn't work without him. That'll upset a few.
But Boyle and Elding chasing or challenging for lumped forward balls just looks pretty thankless to me.

So we'll just get to the players.

Sallinger, didn't do much wrong? In fact I think he done really well. Probably kept us in the game longer than we should've been. The goal that was chalked off for a foul on him, I never saw the foul, I thought he looked weak and just fumbled it to them. VAR redeemed him. He mdae 2 or 3 really good stops, a couple in the second half where Barlaser was trying to gift them goals. More on him later.

O'Hora I thought done well, always does, knows his job and just does it.

Rocky, went off injured, looked a bad one after 15 minutes. No contact from what I could see, very slowly hobbled off. Replaced by Hanley.

Hanley, fuck sake. He's good at defending close to someones back, and poking the ball away. 3 or 4 headers he had, he seemed to head directly into a Motherwell players path, or towards O'Hora when he had no business needing to deal with it. Also went off injured, I thought he stayed down to hide the fact he made a total mess of the fresh air challenge that he missed.

Obita, did a good job too. covered well and was an outball when we needed one.

Passlack, I really like him, he's energetic and wants to be positive every time the balls on his side. Nothing really came off for him though. Not his best day.

Chaiwa, does as much as he can, every week he's playing with a partner who does fuck all for him. Usually Barlaser, Newell today.

Newell, poor. Looked like he was supposed to be a disrupter rather than a footballer, and it just wasn't it. removed at half time.

Cadden, one of the better players, but only because he gets shovelled the ball as often as possible. could've/should've maybe had a couple goals, poor shooting but at least played positively.

McGrath, shite. ineffective and should've been on the bench watching Campbell win headers.

Boyle, The most positive Hibs related thing today, was the announcement of his new 1 year deal. To then go on and have a stinker. Largely not his fault, being forced to challenge for header after header when he just isn't that. Finished the game at left wing and at least looked like he was trying to get forward.

Elding, had to work hard, but he's trying too hard, or doing too much. Needs to learn when to play that pass, or when to run and go. I want to see better from him.

Subs, I've already covered Hanley because he was basically on from the start.

Mulligan came on for McGrath at half time, and played at attacking midfield for a time. Don't have a clue why? don't think it was smart and it should've been Campbell.

Barlaser came on for Newell at half time, and he's a waste of space. Twice he sold us out for a 1v1, one of them fuckin 3 yards from goal. Should be taken out back and booted down the road. I hope we don't bring him back next season. One trick pony who can't affect a game. This sub should've been Mulligan.

Scarlett, came on for the injured Hanley and had I think, our only shot on target? clever move from a freekick, had everyone sleeping except whoever cleared off the line for them.

Suto, chased a ball once I think, can't think of much else. came on at right wing for Elding.

The Manager,
Once again Sir Dave got it all wrong on a big game.
Injuries didn't help him manage the game today, but even the subs were wrong imo. Why Campbell doesn't get on is beyond belief imo. Whether you like him or not, the results since he came in warranted his spot.
Went to a 433 once we were forced to take Hanley off too. Which was a nice change, but we done fuck all with it. It definitely hadn't been worked on prior though, because Cadden kept telling Chaiwa where to be.
I think his tactics get what they deserve. Motherwell 100% deserved to win that game and we didn't really do anything to resist that happening.

We've finished a disappointing season, with a disappointing result and performance.
Thank fuck Celtic done their job, or today would've been the worst day in history. We can celebrate their failure, but the reality is they are half a seasons worth of points ahead of us. Whether we were fourth or fifth, that's the gap between us.

Anyway, that's my thoughts.
I'm broken after getting home at half 4 this morning, so I'm away for a nap, what's your thoughts?
I've tried to keep it just about today, the season reviews and breakdowns will come in hundreds of threads in the coming weeks!

Hibs always, Fuck the Hearts!
No more Celtic songs at Easter Road please.

Signing out, on our 150th year!

Really good summary. Barlaser and Mulligan seemed to make an initial impact but after about 5 minute Motherwell sussed them out and took control of the midfield again. I was really frustrated watching that today, our midfield was non-existent. I cant for the life of me understand why Newell is getting a start in this team. Players hanging on to the ball too long, zero movement, hoofball, no effective pressing...I could go on but everyone has heard it all before..On paper Gray deserves another season but fuck me I dont think I can watch this much longer.

Thanks Hammi

Gutter of a day

If Dunfermline win the cup we go into
Europe in the conference league

If it’s any consolation, so will Motherwell.

Another dreadful performance today at Easter road and being honest another boring 90 + minutes we’ve had to put up,with.

Gray has to go , he’s offering very little and we’re are not going forward I’m afraid. He’s not going to learn that we’re a better side on the front foot. Hibs were third best today and we were miles off it.

Also some of the players out there were horrendous. Joe newell yet again horrific , he wasn’t alone but in his time here it was another no show from captain invisible. If he’s still here then we aren’t gonna see anything else from him.

I'm still on the fence re Gray because 3rd and 5th is respectable but I fear his brand of football is going to result in many more empty seats at ER.

On paper it looks like he’s done a good job but the performances we’ve had to witness will see more and empty seats going forward as you say if he doesn’t change. It’s evident he isn’t going to so we’re stuck with it.

Also Far too much dross playing for the club still around who’ve failed consistently over the years seeing numerous managers bulleted.

Think you're right about Hanley staying down after making a cnutof himself but at the time I thought it was a definite foul on Sallinger for their chalked off goal.
Iwas surprised Campbell didn't start, even more surprised when he didn't even come on as a sub.
Boyle and Elding especially in first half chased down everything and it looked like we were pressing them pretty well but as game went on we seemed to get deeper.
Saw Obita and Chaiwa looking frustrated because of no movement up ahead forcing them to pass back or to the side.
Why Elding didn't pass to Nicky C who was in acres of space was criminal, as you say he needs to learn when to pass.
Stayed till very end to applaude players and families. Noticed Ellie waving hibs flag above his head and bowing several times towards us maybe his last appearance.
Another crazy day at ER most of us coming away smiling and laughing like we'd done it all due to the jambos falling at the final hurdle. The Samaratins down Gorgiway will be on overtime for the rest of the weekend.
Actually I feel a bit sorry for them even though they are our rivals

...only KIDDing

We have shown across the season that on “our day” we can beat any team in the league.

Unfortunately who knows when it’s going to be “our day” or if it will only last 45 mins or less.

Today was a prime example, Motherwell played the same way against us earlier in the year (high press and leave Hanley to punt the ball forward) their manager even explained their tactics post match. So why on earth was it a surprise to SDG and the team when they did the same today.

I don’t believe there is a chasm in talent between ourselves and Motherwell or Hertz. They just have managers who get teams to perform.

I’m not advocating getting rid of SDG but the levels of performance this year repeating themselves next year will see him losing his job.

Brilliant post Hammy agree with all of it 👍🏻 if anything this season has taught us is the unthinkable can be achieved if you're no a jambottler. Thank fuck that season is over, hopefully some fresh faces in the building in the summer.

Another crap performance.

By keeping SDG as manager Hibs will be making a huge statement that says we're content with underperforming, being predictable, winning nothing, boring the fans with turgid football, and failing to get a tune of a good squad of players.

While the neebors set their ambitions sky high we make it clear we dont and settle for averageness.

Sorry SDG but we need someone who can get Hibs playing direct passing football (like Motherwell) not the dire pish we've had all season.

This.

Only one team played football today and it wasn't us. Only one team deserved to win today and it wasn't us.

Only one team has a big top six budget and that's us.

If David Gray wasn't David Gray...

Cheers for that
The game summed up our season, totally boring.
I have to be honest and say that I'm in the SDG out camp but that's for others to decide.
If he does stay then here's hoping he can formulate a plan b.
We certainly need a decent cup run
A consistent league campaign
And some bloody excitement.

68 days until the 1st Conference League game.
Gray will still be here.
I expect 6 or 8 changes to the squad. Preferably no incoming Vanuatu, St.Vincent, Bolivia, Botswana or Bhutan internationals who'll be away for 6 weeks of the season.
Gunts should get an offer they can't refuse for Braga. They'll get 75 points at most next term. Most likely just shy of 70.
Motherwell will be pillaged.
Falkirk will lose a few.
Don't see the Sheep miraculously improving but they will get better.
4th will be par.

He would sail away into the sunset?

Just another observation from today. The game was so stop/start with all the injuries and a pernickety referee, never really got going properly. Also I thought Mulligan was quite fortunate to only get a yellow, he definitely moved his head into the Well player. Ordinarily they would be itching to VAR check that but maybe they didn't want any more controversy or I just didn't see it properly.

I agree with every word here. But get a new manager in quickly, he needs a pre season and a say in who stays and who goes.

Great JB but not a great read in terms of Hibs performance. I think I mentioned earlier Campbell should have played some part?

For a game with such a significance, Hibs were a disgrace today.
Completely outplayed from start to finish by a superior Motherwell team, but the attitude of the players was something to behold.
Nobody seemed up for the game.
We looked soft, slow and unfit.
Motherwell showed a desire and and drive to win the game, we showed none of that.
The Motherwell goalkeeper would have been as well sitting next to me in the Pat Stanton stand for all he had to do.
As poor a performance as I have witnessed from a Hibs team at Easter Road in years.
