This is why I changed my mind against it. We're no better than anyone else so why think we'd be better off smaller? 7000 voters for a limited company that couldn't organise a day without falling out with themselves

I agree that we’re no different to anybody else.
So why shouldn’t we be able to make our own decisions like just about every other country in the world rather than be beholden to a parliament in another country and wed to a relic of the age of empire.
A parliament where, if anything, the chance of reform gaining a significant foothold is higher, as horrific as that is.

But I agree with you that it’s pretty horrendous so many of our fellow countrymen think that shower at Reform are a suitable lot to lead them.

Good post, independence is the right to make a go of it OR make a cnut of it OURSELVES .
We are NOT a northern county ruled by westminster 😡

To me it's a bit wrong headed to tie independence to a particular political outlook, not least in a country that's already been capable of having the greens as part of the government.

An independent Scotland will obviously end up with a political landscape like all other western countries. That's not what it's about, it's about self determination, making it a Scottish choice whether we are governed by green cranks or beery Reformers or anyone else. There's also the possibility of a more viable economy in the long term, but I think the fraction of indy voters who want what that implies is very small.

I still want it but have to admit it's no longer a passion the way it was. Mostly because I think it's the wrong time now and in any case gone for good, or on the cusp of it. In terms of the former, in a dangerous and fast splintering world I'm not sure we can spare the time and effort for something that makes brexit look like a tea party. Nor can we necessarily afford the time, which was always going to be necessary, for the Scottish polity to grow up and familiarise itself with reality. Too many sharks in the water for us to be learning to swim right now.

In terms of the latter, just since covid we have finally embarked on the migration path that everyone else has been on for ages. I dont believe new Scots are likely to reduce their economic opportunities and capacity to move around, by voting for independence while it is based in emotional appeals that come from roots they dont possess. I think within the next five to ten years its thus over for good as a possibility, unless someone can make a compelling economic case. I think the chances of that are essentially zero, not because an economic case can't be made but because its the opposite of what most would want.

We are too small, too shitty, too stupid and too drunk to govern ourselves. It’s a fact.
Why would we leave an establishment that has the likes of the House of Lords at his helm. Imagine not being told what do by the likes of Boris, who openly told us money spent in England was more important than money spent in this shitty little land.
If you stand against independence, you are most likely to get a peerage, and tens of millions thrown into your account.
The only thing wrong with Westminster, is they don’t give me a cuddle when they shaft me.
Thank fuck England loves us and prop us up. I mean, we are not exactly Malta or Cyprus are we,
Long live the King.

I know there's a number of ways this can be calculated and let's be honest ONS are on the naughty step just now, but ...

"The value of goods and services produced in the Scottish capital per head of population has surpassed London’s for the first time, according to economic data recently published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The figures reveal a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of £69,809 in Edinburgh, compared to £69,077 for London.

Let's see how quick the Scottish media are to proclaim this achievement 😆

One in the eye for Khan and Reeves, that. London's wealth flight and general disintegration has likely helped tip the scales.

It's a mixed blessing of course, as Edinburgh is in danger of becoming a Scottish version of London, where finance guys and tourists prop up a wider country that is much poorer. Alas Edinburgh is proportionately much smaller, and wider Scotland poorer. Whether at UK or Scottish level, things need to be spread around the regions.

Still there are plenty of upsides and less excuse for the cooncil claiming to be broke!

But it doesn't total very much when you take difference in population into account. They'll try and convince everybody it means nothing.
