...and taken up one of these last minute bargains, and fecked off a day or two later?

After an abysmal summer and the approach of the 3/4 of the year dreich, ahm contemplating some winter sun if it can be had cheap.

No longer anchored by schools hols I quite fancy doing this semi spontaneous lark at some point. Anyone ever done it? Do you actually land bargains or is it in fact inferior to booking ahead ?

Not quite but remember as a kid my dad buying a hol over teletext last minute… we flew out the next day. Worked out alright!

Not sure if @southfieldhibby is still in the game. If so, he's your man.

Remember the film City Slickers? Well I signed up for something like that (last minute/pre net) when in Canada. Ended up a cross between Papillon and Tenko. I wouldn't rule out a last minute break but with the Internet you can at least do a bit of research.

Think you need to buy 2 though.

I really fancied that but then discovered I knew 2 folk that had done it and it didn't turn out well for either of them.

It started out well with a fantastic price but then you had to pay a supplement to get a reasonable airport at a reasonable time. There was no option for transfers to and from the hotel which was miles away from the stated resort so they had to fork out a fortune on taxis. Think Ryanair type Prestwick for Glasgow! One was so bad they checked out for a hotel where they originally thought they were going.

Pretty much what I would expect.
Jet2 for me.

20 odd years ago there was a Greek company called Kosmar holidays, I used to sell a week self catering to say Kefalonia last minute for £79. All their accommodation was perfectly acceptable and the price included bags and transfers. We used to have queues outside the shop and on a Saturday once I had sat down at my desk that was it until we closed.

Not sure about anymore as I left the industry 4 years ago and I’m out the loop, but if you’re prepared to take a punt on weather I reckon you’d get decent prices to Crete or Rhodes last week in October. Also The Canary Islands early December, as long as you’re back before Xmas was always very cheap.

For package holidays don’t look anywhere else apart from Jet2Holidays or easyJet holidays. They’re vertically integrated operators and have good capacity out of Scotland.

Thanks @southfieldhibby (and everyone else).

Is Greece still warm in winter - I thought I'd have to look canaries etc as you say. Is Greece suggestion tied to autumn?

Aye, will close end October due to dodgy weather. Turkey will still be open but oddly further north than Crete. Probably down to the golf and Turkey teeth trade

Beware Greek Islands late October. Everything starts to close, including bars and restaurants.
And fuckin taxis!
Me and the missus were faced with a three mile trek back to hotel in the middle of nowhere….. in the dark, with wolves howling nearby.

Scary as.

The wolves are probably still trembling at the thought.

We always used to go to the Greek Islands in October as we found it too hot earlier in the year but, as you say, things were usually winding down by mid October. Still pleasant temperature though.

I know somebody who did this every year - but I began to doubt myself that bucket shops ever existed

Am I the only person on here who has never booked a holiday?Up until now I never had the financial means to do so.

Booked flights through agents in the old days but only once for a holiday in Lloret. Missed the flight home and landed a job instead.

All my holiday money goes on EasyJet to Scotland and back every year or two. Even when I was married, but we did go on family hols to holiday playparks and bungalows inside Holland.

Put me off holidays for life! 😁
