I have never seen Citizen Kane all the way through, nor have I seen any of the lord of the rings films, the seventh seal, nor the seven samuri, does this make me a bad person?

How do you know if a film is great if you have never seen it?

Are you Moaty?

reply to roorky

you know by reputation,in most film critics best of list, citizen kane tends to be right up there.

Never seen any of the Godfather movies or any Lord of the Rings ( not even seen any Harry Potter films-though some folk claim they're great).Ten Commandments? Nope. Seven Samurai? Nope. Citizen Kane. Nope.

Ahh right, so you let others decide what you like then?

I would love to see a few of these best of lists, where do I find them?

I would imagine you would find the website of a noted film critic

and they are likely to tell you what they consider their best films. Also see Film 80 something with barry norman or 2000 and something with jonathan ross.

Seen a lot of the so called classics only because I could get them out the library for free when at uni.

Tried a couple of Bergman films but are pretty grim, real chore to get through.

The Harry Potter films are supposed to be great, and am certain I would enjoy them but can't seem to get over the fact they are in the kids/fantasy/adventure genre. Same goes with the Lord of the Rings films.

A film I have purposely put off watching is Barry Lyndon by Kubrik, heard it is one of these 'must see on the big screen' movies but never had the chance.

Watched Citizen Kane about a year ago for the first time. I thought it was amazing, way ahead of its time. It think that's what folk forget, when it was made. You see techniques in that film that are still used by director today.

Thought seven samurai was quality.

Lord of the rings films are pretty good although I've not read the books. The third one was way too long though.

Liked the godfather movies but didn't think they were amazing or anything.

Harry potter films are good kids films but not really my type of thing.

Thought raging bull was shite.

If you had read the LOTR book(s) you'd have been pretty happy with the first film, less happy with the second, and completely pissed off with what they did with the third one which took major liberties with the story and focussed on many of the wrong aspects of the book (IMO).

P.S. I agree, Raging Bull was shite (but the best insomnia cure ever!:lookaround:)... but for some reason anyone who states this (like you or me) are branded philistines by the film cognoscenti.

Phuggin' fillistines :giggle:

Scorsese has more style in his little finger than most other directors have in their whole body.

Anyhoo, one I've tried to watch but can never get very far into is Gone With the Wind.

I've tried a few times and I just think it's awful. It's a sin that it won all the Oscars when The Wizard of Oz should have.
