I watched the debate to mark Pride Month yesterday morning on BBC Parliament. Splendid contributions from LGBT+ MPs whose electorate new about their sexuality before voting for them, to a disgracefully empty house both sides of the chamber. Amongst many fine speakers were....

Angela Eagle Labour Wallasey

Elliot Colburn Tory Carshalton

David Mundell Tory Dunfriesshire

Mhairi Black SNP Paisley........

who splendidly talked about Trans and criticised all parties including the SNP....

.....and 35 year auld Scouser, working class gay MP for Liverpool Walton, Dan Carden, who had my utter admiration during his remarkable contribution. He talked about coming out and spoke honestly about what his constituents probably did not know about him, speaking powerfully about the mental health battles he faced when coming to terms with his sexuality as a young man and how this led to an alcohol addiction that nearly killed him twice. He has been in recovery for the past 3 years. Class act son.

I am no expert on the subject however I think this may be the first time ever that a sitting politician has ever talked publically in the UK Parliament or any other country for that matter about his /her very recent addiction but as importantly about being in recovery. The signals that it puts out are unquestionably positive in my opinion.

MSM coverage will be minimal I expect.

I don't think anyone should get too upset about this, unless they also get upset about the fact that most debates are held with a disgracefully empty house. Indeed for many of the 'important' debates MPs only turn up when it's time to vote.

Empty, or occasionally sparsely populated by bored individuals playing on their phones.

Mind you, the bufties showing up at the House of Lords simply to claim their allowance........ half of them don't know what day it is, or where they are - as long as they pick up some readies.

It's a great to see this being discussed more openly these days. It's going to make life easier for a lot of people.

A young-ish (21) member of my family came out recently, shortly after he joined The Navy for top cliché points, and the acceptance has been unanimous.

This is something I don't think would have happened even a few years ago, where he would have been the subject of snide jokes or unnecessary worry from otherwise rational people in my family.

Pity I missed it. I'd be particularly interested n Mhairi Black's contribution as she and Joanna Cherry both lesbians are on opposite poles on the trans issue.

A future left wing SNP leader?

SNP could do with a left move, because right now they are way off the Indy movement I want to see.
