I watched the debate to mark Pride Month yesterday morning on BBC Parliament. Splendid contributions from LGBT+ MPs whose electorate new about their sexuality before voting for them, to a disgracefully empty house both sides of the chamber. Amongst many fine speakers were....
Angela Eagle Labour Wallasey
Elliot Colburn Tory Carshalton
David Mundell Tory Dunfriesshire
Mhairi Black SNP Paisley........
who splendidly talked about Trans and criticised all parties including the SNP....
.....and 35 year auld Scouser, working class gay MP for Liverpool Walton, Dan Carden, who had my utter admiration during his remarkable contribution. He talked about coming out and spoke honestly about what his constituents probably did not know about him, speaking powerfully about the mental health battles he faced when coming to terms with his sexuality as a young man and how this led to an alcohol addiction that nearly killed him twice. He has been in recovery for the past 3 years. Class act son.
I am no expert on the subject however I think this may be the first time ever that a sitting politician has ever talked publically in the UK Parliament or any other country for that matter about his /her very recent addiction but as importantly about being in recovery. The signals that it puts out are unquestionably positive in my opinion.
MSM coverage will be minimal I expect.
