There's an unheard Joy Division song doing the rounds.

A couple of years ago, I was on the Joy Division Central messageboard when this guy was claiming to have a JD/Warsaw rehearsal tape from 77. Everyone thought he was full of it, and told him to put up or shut up. To the shock of all, he did just that, uploading a brief snippet of a previously unheard song. Audio quality wasnt great, but sure enough, it seemed to be what he claimed. A longtime board member who had worked the sound on early JD gigs said he believed it was authentic. The board went nuts trying to get this guy to upload the whole tape. He vacillated for months, saying he would, and then saying the tape was a very personal thing for him and that he didnt want to share it with the world. (He seems to be connected with the band somehow.) Eventually, as frustration and criticism mounted, he stopped showing up on the board.
Now, years later, I see someones gotten a hold of the complete song. Its only appeared on one blog so far (and not the JD Bootlegs blog thats so comprehensive). Just thought Id pass it along, itll probably start popping up all over the place in short order. Its definitely no lost masterpiece, but its no worse than anything else from this period. I recognize a bit of the rhythm was later recycled for one of the songs on Still. (If I were home I could refresh my memory, darn!) The guitar, to me, has a lot of the sound and feel of the Velvets 66 Warhol tapes.

It was taken from a tape of early rehearsals by the band, probably at TJ Davidsons in Peter Street, Manchester, during 1977.
As it happens, the songs authenticity has now been confirmed conclusively, as Peter Hook just performed it at the February 6 opening of the new Factory club. Folks over at JD Central are guessing the tune most likely originates from 78, sometime after the December 77 Ideal For Living material but before the May 78 RCA sessions.
