First of all can I please quantify this by stating the en vogue mantra of the pseudo intellectual that I "hardly watch any tv but.."

I'm hoping to get a few recommendations to while away my hangovers here but will give my tuppence worth first.

I hardly watch any tv but,

True Detective : Absolutely brilliant. I gave up on Breaking Bad because I thought it was a bit rubbish and annoying. I loved The Wire. This, in the most humblest of opinions, is better. Having had something of a morbid fascination since my Stephen King days of yore I'm drawn to the dark side anyway. And this is as dark as it gets. From Rust Cohle (Matthew Mcconaughey)'s bleak nihilistic philosophy to the baddies predilection for devil worship and paedophilia it can barely get darker. I rarely bum up actors but Mcconaughey is scene stealingly brilliant in this, as he often is. It's subjective, I know, but this was one of the best things I've seen. In contrast;

Veep : Hilarious. If you loved The Thick Of It then this is the American version. Fear not, it's the same writers, they haven't been allowed to bastardize it. There's no Malcolm Tucker but it's probably still funnier. Not much on tv amuses me but I love this. They have some way of lingering on facial expressions or something that just cracks me up. Maybe just me. I was never quite right in the head.

I hardly watch any films but;

Her : Brilliant. Hugely intelligent and romantic enough to take your other half to. Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his OS (Scarlett Johansson). Not that she's ugly but I only fell in love with Scarlett after hearing her voice in this. Speaking of whom;

Under The Skin : I'd read the book a while back so have no idea what someone coming to this film afresh would make of this. It's a million miles removed from the book but at least you have an inkling of what's going on. I truly have no idea what I'd have thought of this if I hadn't read the book. Good though. Bit arthousey but I'm kinda into that. Oh and her first victim is a hibee wearing last year's strip even though it seems to be based in Glasgow.

Nymphomaniac : You're either a Lars von Trier fan or not I'd imagine. I am. But by christ this is hard work. One of the darkest things I've ever seen. But possibly worth it. I don't know.

Locke : Tom Hardy in a car on his phone. Doesn't sound hugely riveting but it is.

Cavalry : Darkish, comediesh film about a priest being tested in small village Ireland. Pretty good and pretty clever. I'd imagine it would appeal to a few here.

I don't watch much tv though.
