Director of IMO one of the greatest films of all time, The Deer Hunter, dies at age 77.
Didn't know he also directed Thunderbolt and Lightfoot...another great movie.
Just to balance things though he also directed Heavens Gate which was such a disaster at the box office it almost bankrupted United Artist studios.

RIP Michael

I don't know how many times I watched the Deer Hunter as a teenager. I could quote half the script at one time. One of my favourite films of all time, with some truly staggering performances and some of the most poignant moments in films.

do you remember the trees?

RIP Michael

I echo the Deer Hunter is one of my all time favourite films. Acting, action, story, message, Meryl Streep, everything!

Heaven's Gate is one of the finest film that I have ever seen. I saw it in 1980 and utterly blown away. Still one of my top 5. Watch it amigos. 44m bucks out 1.5 bucks in. As Miles would have said 'So What'.

Heavens Gate is an odd one, great looking and well acted but a bit flabby and portentous. It certainly doesn't deserve half the flak it gets.

The Deer Hunter is a genuine masterpiece though.
