I read elsewhere though unconfirmed.

This Despite winning more votes than 2 from 3 combined of LD, SNP, Greens.

Novel to watch a poltician stick to their word I'm such circumstances - or, at all.

Seems he has "resigned", in so much as there will be a Leadership vote and he may put himself forward as a candidate for that.

Of those 3 parties you mention only the Lib Dems campaign across the entire UK so it is a little unfair to compare the others.

I can't help but wonder how many seats an SNP sister party could have achieved if one had campaigned in England.

If you drsigned an snp style party in the context of England and it's different challenges, concerns and neuroses, it would look like UKIP.

Didn't know the greens weren't uk wide. By any measure UKIP have done well, if they could convert votes to seats at snp rates they'd have 130+!

who are the front runners for the new leaders?

evette cooper? labour
paul nuttall? ukip
carmichael? cable again? LD

cable went too, totally missed that which LDs are left?

Burnham/Evans/Farron seem more likely to me, especially if AB can get the backing of Dan Jarvis. No doubt Ed Balls will be pulling in favours to position his wife.

I image Ed and Ed sitting joggies drinking lager and playing fifa all day. evette coming home and going radge at him...

Really?

Pro-Trident, pro-fracking, anti-renewable energy, anti-EU...

There's bound to be a couple of million English voters put off by all those things, and the thought of UKIP being racist, who don't still want something opposed to the Tories or Labour.

I could be wrong and maybe all it would do would be taking a handful of the Greens votes but maybe not.

Yes. Your racist point suggests you're a little out of touch here Nex. This isn't lily white scotland where people sit in state jobs and blame all woes on England. These are people whose communities and employment prospects are being wrecked and whose political representation has been co-opted by London luvvies who call them bigots for protesting their situation.

meanwhile look at your other points - I don't think trident is going to be top of these people's priorities but they're part of the big country that will need to look after us, and probably don't nurse the wee country opt out fantasies we do.

For pro fracking read pro manufacturing jobs. Opposition to which is as clear an example as you'll find of an agenda where middle class leftism trumps labour interests. Renewable energy is nice, but again it's all a bit mumsnet Nex. Anti EU - well shockeroonie, you'll be telling me the SNP is anti Union next.

In short I think you are indeed talking about the greens and they have their place already in providing and outlet for students and wealthy bohemians.

The English cannot posit a fantasy future based on escaping the perfidious infkuence of Holyrood - they have different issues and UKIP represents that.

Tristram whateverhisnameis Education Shadow Man is on the tellybox saying Labour had paid the price for failing to deal with the impact of globalisation on the working people in cities and towns in England where people feel their wages have been depressed, their job opportunities reduced and there is no outlet for expression of their cultural identity. He's going on about UKIP and the SNP giving people an alternative vote to express their frustration and that Labour need to consider "what kind of Social Democratic party" they want to be and how they now deal with the consequences of immigration and globalisation...

Andrew Neil then asked the obvious...was he angling to challenge for the job. He denied it.

Cabinet reshuffle about to be announced in the next hour or so...

Labour being led by a plummy fella called Tristram Hunt would be a fitting end.

Hunt is on Sky news right now, he's clearly positionjng himself, playing the nationalist card as you describe, and putting the boot into Ed in the most polite way.

Burnham is the bookies' favourite, Yvette Cooper and Chuka Umunna the other two front runners. Hunt is around the same odds as David Miliband. Rachel Reeves being quoted too.

Burnham is by far the most effective Labour front-bencher and IMO would make their best leader....Lib Dems look a spent force right now, but probably someone like Carmichael would be an experienced guy in to get them through this. As for UKIP Nuttal looks a good bet to replace Farage.

The irony is that these ideas were being put around by Glasman, Cruddas etc. in 2010, only to be shut down by the likes of Hunt and Diane Abbott as 'racist'.

Reconciling the party's position vis-a-vis globalisation is the key now.

Indeed. And on the other side you had Blond's red Tory stuff trying to connect with them. The nabobs of the pc elite shut em down as you say. The people are the number one class enemy of labour with a small L.

This is labours chance to reform itself. We'll see how they get on because they need to reject pretty much everything since Michael foot. It'll be a tall order.

didn't vote them because I am still uneasy on some things, plus to and from on Europe. Gotta say though at least they speak up on some issues that the rest skirt around and don't pander to the will of every minority group

UKIP came 2nd in a whole load of places down south......

Dods Monitoring on Twitter:

They got a very commendable 12% share of the vote and got precisely 1 MP to show for it...compared with the SNP's 4% share of the vote and getting 56 MP's. I don't agree with UKIP's policy on Europe amongst other things but Farage has brought them far and they are certainly now a force to be reckoned with in England. To be honest they polled far better than I thought they would. Farage, whatever you might think about him, has been an excellent leader of their party.

David Lammy has said he will stand for Labour leader if he gets the backing of his colleagues. First hat in the ring.

psychocandy Can you expand on hurnham and civil liberties ?

Nigel Farage has been "persuaded by the NEC to withdraw his resignation and remains leader of UKIP".

From Twatter

Strange one on Farage... I personally think that having secured a good base in England with good second place finishes Labour would be shit scared if they elected that Scouse deputy leader...

I guess it's predictable and old Nige has in true politician fashion done what he has to to 'keep his word' while doing a volte face.

I never understood his pledge anyway. In the face of an unprecedented establishment assault, a conspiracy of the press to demonise and then exclude, he's delivered a vote 42% the size of Labour's. If PR was introduced - which it won't be - it would not be impossible for UKIP to be bigger than Labour by 2020. As it is they could still do in the North what SNP have done in Scotland. It's a remarkable contemporary example of an establishment war on a grass roots people's movement, which many people are unable to get past their own biases to see.

Anyway, it's a pretty remarkable testament to Farage and there really was no need for him ever to pledge resignation in the event he didn't win a seat.
