In the market for a bike, preferably from Halfords[thanks to my kids for the b/day vouchers!]

Nothing too fancy but don't want it to fall apart after 3 weeks!

Any recommendations?

What are you going to be using the bike for? I know that sounds like a stupid question but you can get Road Bikes, Mountain bikes or a hybrid which is in between the two.

I bought a Ridgeback hybrid about a year and a half ago and its been the perfect wee bike for jumping to work and back. From Halfords I had a Voodoo Masara which was about the same price but nowhere near as good (got nicked). I'd avoid Halfords to be honest and go to a proper Bike shop

Basically to get fit. A bit of off road & some road stuff too so I suppose a hybrid is what I'm looking for, I just don't know which bikes are decent & which are not. When I cycled many years ago Raleigh was the bike to have but there are so many makes on the go now I haven't heard of, I really don't know where to start

The avoiding of Halfords is really not an option because I have a hefty voucher to use there. Surely they must have decent bikes too?

Alright Larry,
Since I started cycling 4 years ago it's grabbed me by the baws and I now have four bikes for different terrain and conditions.
If it's just a 'getting about' and versatile bike you're after I would consider a hybrid bike. Halfords have a number of options of make but Boardman is their winning option. The Boardman range offers value for money if you look at the specification of components.

I've had a short look at various options and the MX Sport 2014 is a great deal.

Halfords | Boardman MX Sport 2014

Now and coming months is the best time to buy a bike as it's end of cycling season sale time. Take your time with your selection, Halfords are reasonable with advice, they've certainly focused heavily in the last few years in being more bike focused in their sale approach.

Happy tae help.

Does your council employer do a cycle to work scheme? If so you will be able to buy a decent bike at a reduced cost, installments taken off wages at source, before tax - meaning you pay less all round. :dunno:

I think they do as it happens, but as I have the use of one of their gull killi.....sorry works vans, I don't know if they would be willing to do this with me?

Cycle to work ironically HAS to be done through Halfords.

There are similar schemes that allow you to buy elsewhere.

I got my bike through the cycle to work scheme.

I have a Carrera Kraken Mountain bike.

I would personally head in and see what you can get for you budget. Remember it's similar to cars in a sense as you'll get more on your bike for a lesser known brand i.e Apollo compared to Carrera/Boardman

Mind that if there isn't any bike in the Halfords range that you want on Cycle to Work they can source something similar of not the one you desire from another retailer.

I had a look at cycle to work scheme two years ago. Great idea but after the year of making a tax free saving on payments you then either have to hand it back and start another one or purchase it from your employer whom have effectively been renting it to you. The market value you pay is near the savings you made from what I can calculate hive or take about 30.

August is always the Edinburgh bikes sale time, though you may be a bit late to get the best deals. I got a Specialized Rockhopper with a third off one year.

Depending on how much you have in vouchers you could put that towards the helmet, gloves and lights. Pretty sure edinburgh bikes also do a bike to work scheme. They also take the bike back one month later to tighten gears and breaks after breakin in period.

I took 550 from my work on the scheme. I paid 12 x 27 and then a final payment of 25, so i effectively saved 200.

Cracking scheme imo

If you're like most men you'll use your new toy loads the first few months then it'll gather dust in the shed. I wouldn't spunk loads on it at this stage. Halfords have loads of bikes for under 200 that will suit your needs. If you get a passion for cycling, sell that one and upgrade to a premium bike later but at this stage I wouldn't bother.

True Proccie ,it can become a bit of a chore----more so in the winter months------but I have to exercise for health purposes as well as pleasure.

But you're right, it would be silly of me to buy something more suited to guys who are serious about their bikes & biking.

Halfords can source bikes for you outside if their range for cycle to work. You can also use other stores if they accept the vouchers.

I've just this year purchased a single speed Genesis cyclocross from Alpine Bikes but through the Halfords C2W scheme.

That's my 3rd bike through the scheme.
