I used to like going to Berwick rangers games with my uncle. They played hard and wanted to win. They never had expectations of winning the cup, or getting into Europe. I’m sure Dunfermline, Forfar, Stranraer etc are all the same.
Hibs however expect to achieve. Why?
I don’t want them to be underachevers, I want results.
The club as a whole needs a major rethink. Do we want to be like the afford mentioned clubs, or do we want to be a major force in Scottish football.
This question goes to the oweners of the club.
How to resolve this? Opinions please.

Top 6 isn't an accomplishment but it isn't a failure either. 5th is our par score and there's a lot more room for Motherwell/DU/Killie/etc to put it together and catch us-Hearts-Sheep than for us to catch the OF

Long as Hibs view it that way, that's how it'll stay.

Bottom 6 is a failure. Unless we have an extended stay in Europe.
If Hibs are happy with top 6 and accepting finishes behind Motherwell etc, then that's fine.
Tell us that's what we are though, don't lead us on thinking we want to be third best.

Being third best means aiming higher than celebrating top 6 finishes.

Club seem happy with top 6, from what I've seen so far it looks like it's going to be a tough season, probaly just scrape 6th and the club will somehow turn it into a success story. Season on season we've slowly regressed which needs sorted.

I basically think the opposite - I think a club of our size and budget can't overachieve if 'okay' is a failure - it'll just be an endless churn of managers (again) and no club culture (again) and a cycle of players arriving, getting feart off the crowd and leaving, including cash money signings (again) and getting caught in a finishing 6th-10th spiral (again).

If we say 5th is good, 3rd is great, maybe for the odd hun collapse season we've got a coherent squad that could be bolstered if we gamble in january...

Third isn't an over achievement though?
It's a good season where we've got what we aim for.

Wouldn't be sacking managers just for finishing in the top 6, that's their minimum requirement. Other factors would come into that. But you've got to aim for third. Challenge for third.
If we're 5th and playing 4th we need to go at them to take their place.

Hibs coming out and acting like top 6 is an achievement is aiming low imo.

I don't know if we're working from very different definitions here. I feel like 80% of Hibs seasons will land in the vast grey area between 'shit' and 'great'. I think it's possible for Hibs to finish 5th/6th and for us have basically no opinion on the results but be cheerful/worried/ambivalent on the basis of the squad's prospects.

Sometimes you just have to say a point away at Tannadice is an acceptable result, you know? We've had an away point sort of summer. We've got an away point sort of squad. If I thought Hibs had no plans to ever do well I'd be upset but we're not in a vacuum. Other clubs want players too. Other teams try and win too. The players like the manager and we score late goals as well as concede them.

Idk I just don't feel like Hibs are in a particularly bad spot at the moment. I feel like people are ignoring the good results and catastrophising the bad ones

So if the Gent second leg performance and bad result wasn't a catastrophe, can you give an example of what would be?
 
Third should be what Hibs should be aiming for every season, and trying to get nearer to Celtic and Rangers.
Top six should be a given for a club of our size and turnover.
Bottom six is a complete disaster and should result in heads rolling.

We are in the tranche of three clubs just below the Glasgow pair.
The two Edinburgh clubs and Aberdeen are the next level down from them.
We have to aspire to be best of the rest every season and get as high up the league as we can.
European football should be our definite aim, and a trophy win more frequently than in the past.

Believe it or not, this is a football forum. To reference events in Nepal in this context is pathetic, when you knew perfectly well I was looking for clarification of what was meant by "catastrophising" bad football results.
Should we close down discussion of football altogether given the daily news of death and disaster in various parts of the world?

I'd point at the european campaigns of celtic and rangers. Turned over by teams they dwarf. (That latter point is why I don't include hearts on the list.)

We got past the two clubs we were favourites to beat, and ended up unfortunate not to get past a club i think most outside punters would have made favourites ahead of time.

In terms of performance in that game, we played well for longer than we played poorly but took a sore one in terms of the outcome. It happens. It absolutely wasn't a catastrophe.

What boils my piss is that when we want to attack...we can.

We just seem to play this stupid backwards,sidewards passing.

Why can we not just start on the front foot every week?

I disagree, I think we only played well for about half an hour.
The first match, and the first half at Easter Road were virtually the same thing. 2 teams feeling each other out. With them getting the majority of the chances and us defending well.

Half hour of proper good football, a good attitude, putting them on the back foot and suffocating them in their own half.

Then we get ahead and think we can rely on defending again.

It's a game we threw away and cost us that money.
Seen the argument elsewhere that we haven't lost that money, which is true 3 weeks ago. But after being ahead and going through. We did lose out on that.

Same folk arguing we didn't bottle that game are the same folk who say hearts bottled the league on the final day.
I don't see a difference.

It’s like we always need some kind of event (usually a goal conceded) to break us out of our slow safe passing it along the back 3 and GK comfort zone. We shouldn’t require that boot up the arse to show some attacking intensity. And often once we’ve scored a goal or 2 we revert back to this style of play.

The subs seem to be data driven, you can see Gray and his back room team huddled around an iPad. i.e. the GPS data stats shows Jamie McGrath has put in a shift, best get him subbed. “Eh, but gaffer, he’s actually playing really well and we kind of need to win this game?” “DATA!”

On ambition/expectations, we pinned our European hopes on a young loanee centre forward to fire us to the group stages.

I actually thought we were pretty shit the whole game bar 2 or 3 short spells. Im expecting more of the same today... every game is like a carbon copy of the one before.
