Edinburgh roads

You been right up the Avenue yet Billy? From what I can see from my hoose I appear to have the only parking space right outside my hoose.

Which leads nicely to the council dafties because the auld wummin who had the hoose before me had disabled parking.

I got a letter from the council a couple of years back as they were doing away with road markings and were going to install a no parking sign in the garden.

No I don't need the sign says I.

Obviously no one paid attention. Now the hospital workers will have to fight it out to park there.

Na mate. Between driveways though. So instead of three cars cramming into the space there will only be one now.

I've expected it on the Avenue for a while because of the buses.
Why the missing bit Jimmy? Is that for your disabled neebs?

Aye ‘tis morning. Only bit no done is at yours.

Never let it be said us auld retired yins don't think about yous youngsters.

Here's next week's road closures for yous.....

I cannot see any good coming from this and the budget for it will no doubt be a lot more than the one projected....

Details of planned Edinburgh tram expansion costing up to £2.9bn published.

Fights have already started on Facebook between the mad cyclists and the tram is good types.

Apparently the proposed route now includes a bird and wildlife sanctuary 😆

Those against the tram had a wee table out today explaining how the path thats been there for only a few years is now the most important thoroughfare in Edinburgh after Princes Street.

It's not going to affect me much but I will say the Newhaven extension appears to be extremely well used and with all the proposed housing beyond the Western General, the colleges and stuff I suspect that line would be even busier!

The dippy council must be close to having what it has for brains imploding. Pet project tram actually becoming close to a network Vs the cyclopaths Vs the first time a tram line has run through a posh bit of the toon and the agro that will bring.

Get the 🍿 oot 😆

If it's going to come over the bridges to Newington then down Minto street methinks it will not be welcome by folk up there.

In answer to the 27 mad cyclists who use the path every day, they managed to incorporate a path alongside the tram track between Saughton and Balgreen, so wind yer necks in.

It would be a disgrace if they use the Roseburn cycle path for this purpose. Used to run it regularly when I stayed in Corstorphine, an an oasis of calm and serenity and greenery amid the hustle and bustle of the city. Has connections to other parts of the city too, Blackhall, Crewe Toll, Cramond, Ocean Terminal etc. Reading the article it appears this is ECC's preferred route though so it'll no doubt happen after their token "consultation period" 😞

I mind the tram plans of the mid 80s and the absolute meltdown in Gilmerton Road where people might lose a metre of their gardens

I drove right along Ferry rd yesterday then great jn street and up Easter rd to get to the club shop. The roads are an absolute disgrace. If theres not potholes then theres road works everywhere arguably masking things worse. ECC are absolute shop front, they hate cars in the city so they are not fixing the roads.

Time fir saltires on the potholes? 🤔

Now what a surprise… go through to Glasgow and M8, M74, M80 etc all get huge upgrades costing hundreds of millions, for years it’s been happening.
Edinburgh city bypass, the Edinburgh disgrace more like. Basically bugger all done to it in 30 years, still a ridiculous 2 lane bypass, still has a daft roundabout at each end and even worse a roundabout at the end of the M8 to join the said disgrace, with the incredibly dangerous very short slip road onto it from Baberton which causes huge problems.
Someone got paid to design this pathetic problem?
Probably started about 40 years ago, but no excuses.
And NOTHING has changed!!
Yet it takes years just to get past a “talking stage”
Traffic jams cause huge emissions??? Completely ignored because Tory can’t charge our time anyone, but as the council can’t convert any of it to bike lanes or congestion charge, not a shit is given.
East and Midlothian as it states in link, are the 2 biggest regions of growth in Scotland! Traffic at south/east. Add in all the traffic from the borders and still nothing AT ALL done to leviate or help commuters in any way whatsoever, just build and build, no problem, we will ket it get to gridlock, then charge every driver a fortune to enter the boundaries of Edinburgh!! Funny thing is, that that scenario maybe the exact truth.
But cycle a bike and “hey, wait, we’ve got lots cash to help improve your experience”
The bypass should just be the start.
Edinburgh fuckin council is a disgustingly apprehensible organisation.

Early morning sunday rant over …
Time for :coffee1:

Sainsbury's offered to build a flyover a long time ago but couldn't get permission for their store because it was greenbelt. Does any of that greenbelt still exist?
The bypass has never been fit for purpose and is only getting worse.

Even the Proclaimers mention the state of Edinburgh's roads on their song Streets of Edinburgh.
The roads really are in an appalling state though in this city.
Can never understand why the council can't get the basics right, like refuse collection times, fixing potholes on the roads, and clearing sivers. I remember as a bairn watching the siver man coming round and clearing all the drains and sivers.
The City of Edinburgh is now delivering a per capita gross value add at the same level as London.

However 1) the City of Edinburgh Council has the lowest per capita local authority allocation in Scotland. However 2) unlike most other Scottish local authorities CEC is trying to manage growing demand for services due to an expanding population. In effect Edinburgh is subsidising service delivery in other parts of Scotland.

A local income tax is the answer.

Bet they’ll find money for the fuckin trams though.

Just drove round the bypass and never got above 25mph from M8 to past Straiton. Sheriffhall was actually the quietest bit today.

A local income tax is the answer.
Completely agree re the underinvestment in road infrastructure (CEC are anti cars) but for it to be funded by a local Edinburgh income tax, really?

We’ve already got the disparity with Scottish income tax, discouraging employers to grow or invest in Scotland (v rUK for example) and this would be further fuel on the fire, which would soon erode GVA.

The Scottish Government has said it's not funding it.

The council said it's not funding it! The Newhaven extension was using future tram fare revenues and a dividend from Lothian Buses.

"Potential future funding sources could include private finance or developer contributions, as the council insists it will not use council tax for the project.

I noticed, almost hidden away in a few days that's it's probably been a decent time to hide news that may be controversial, that Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams have joined up to become one company under the Transport for Edinburgh name.

Car drivers are only one user of the road infrastructure. Others include workies, pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and the communities through which the roads pass.

In the past car drivers were the principal/only consideration in all things roads, and it was a relative doddle to justify a new roads scheme. Thankfully that notion has been consigned to history. Many car drivers find that a bit hard to take but that's progress.

The council are daein the surveys and consultations. £3b is a lot of bus fares.

Agree with all of that; my point was more about the creation of a further income tax not being the right means to fund it.

The tax would be the same except that a portion of the tax would go directly to local authorities, and be subject to local council oversight rather than Scottish government priorities. Alternatively you could devolve regional spend of the government agencies including Transport Scotland, Scottish Enterprise etc. to achieve proper local accountability.

Understood, thought you were meaning additional income tax for edi residents.

Does feel like better use of the overall tax wallet would help generally!

The operating lifetime of a heavy tram system is about 50 years. A £6 million a year infrastructure investment is sod-all. This attitude towards transformational infrastructure investments is a major reason why we've got a victorian rail network, no underground network and haven't built a new reservoir in decades.

It's also about spending priorities. In Scotland we invest heavily in managed decline in places like Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Grangemouth. Thats only right of course, but Team Scotland is not good at investing in future growth and prosperity and Edinburgh suffers as a consequence IMHO.

We wasted our share on the trams most likely…

I’d also say we are very poor at attracting inward investment; in fact many policies (and behaviours) have actively pushed it away.

Riding of the Marches today. Rat bairn just phoned. Apparently they are getting through Gracemount at a gallop before they get attacked.

They will be heading down the Avenue very shortly.

Blimey!
I didn't even realise this happened in Edinburgh, although I've seen the similar carry on in the Borders.
