Edinburgh roads

We need a proper solution to the cycling problem imo. Choking the roads in the name of cycle paths is a mess, not least on ones scarcely used by cyclists.

I’m no town planner but surely there is a way to create a cycle network that largely bypasses roads and is routed through parks, old railway routes and the like?

If that was done I’d be more likely to do more cycling myself. Cars And bikes sharing is no fun whichever role one is in at the time.
You know folk spend years at university and careers doing what used to be called Town and Country Planning and I'll bet they never thought of that 😆

Too busy planning the demise of private cars I suspect. No cars plenty room for bikes. Shame for the folk that can't cycle for whatever reason.

I’m not familiar with the route so don’t know about the spacing in that particular area, but your comment inspires the thought that with a bit of joined up thinking, cycle routes could be implemented in parallel to tram routes. They take up so much space anyway, that running a cycle path alongside is probably only incrementally disruptive, and it could be wrapped up in the build for scale economies.

What we can’t do is bring Edinburgh’s road network to an increasing standstill. I know some fitter than thou cyclists disagree, but a city built on hills is never going to be a predominantly cycling city, anymore than one in a Scottish climate will have a thriving cafe culture.

These things are the hallmarks of a Pygmy political class who are allergic to difference and specifics in general, and seemingly capable only of copying rather than innovating.
The Roseburn Path is a well used cycling and walking path. The issue is that it's also ideal for the tram extension. You can't fit both.

Town and Country Planning?

Really? Looks like it's been organised by bairns with big crayons. It's embarrassing. It's a fuckin mess.
We need to look at it in the round. Politicians get paid way less than senior management in business. Less so in Scotland and less so in local politics. Same applies with the civil service.

While there are no doubt very well intentioned people involved, and some highly competent ones, the inevitable result over the piece is we get people who are not A game players, and a bunch of ideologues who are not in it for the money (and a qualified fair play to those not on trust funds).

Results are predictable: mediocrity plus mad ideology = clusterfuck.

All the incentives that underpin society are wrong and @GORDONSMITH7 is right; I have no idea how you fix it. Socialism just amplifies the above, while the secularisation of society means the competent often have no higher calling than their own material enrichment.

Ok. Makes sense. Well on this occasion I’m siding with the lads dressed like podium dancers in a gay club.

The city planners you mean?
Perhaps in the Patrick Harvie era, but no I meant cyclists.

I’ve always been suspicious of the feckers. I remember a big autistic chap I worked with years ago who had tackle like Mike Tyson’s fist when buttressed by his jodhpurs. Fecker wouldn’t be changed till lunchtime most days and used to wander about folks desks with said jewels at face height. Had to tell the Cnut a number of times; I mean I’ll bite ye ya plum, but the young lasses in the team ; have a word.

A lot of them seem like that to me, the middle class version of the sun bed / roids muscle Mary in his represent sweatshirt and stone island shorts.

The number 8 bus goes from Granton to the ERI mate.

If it's the same as last time it's going to be a nightmare in South Edinburgh

Most of the old railway network has been turned into cycle routes? But I know one that hasn’t.Goes through Abbeyhill and past Shrubhill to Powderhall.A track not been used for years crying out for change to a cycling track. Also there used to be a road ran to the right of Smokey Brae that ran behind Meadowbank and finished at Abbeyhill.Could that not be opened again? Also a tunnel goes from the Waverley down to Broughton could be utilised .

Clockmill Lane

The tram is faster up Leith Walk than the bus.
Ah but the number 8 bus stops right outside ma hoose so it's handy for me.

So does the 400. So ifnim heading to the airport I'm cushty.

Saying that tram works won't affect me personally. But it will be a nightmare for anyone trying to get to work from our bit to up the toon.

And the eventual aim is to take the trams right up into Dalkeith or Eskbank.

OK. But the tram extension would provide a direct link from Granton to the ERI. A good thing surely?
But at any cost? Road closures, businesses going bust, general inconvenience for something that a lot of folk may not ever see in their lifetimes.

One big advantage the car has over the bus is for shopping.Ever tried to get a 90 year old woman with a wheel aid and 6 big bags of messages from the Kirkgate to the bus stop in Duke St onto the bus then off again at Sleigh Drive down to Findlay Grove? Not easy.Which is why we often got a taxi.

This is exactly the case between Saughton and Balgreen.

Absolutely Moaty and the kind of thing the fashionable set don’t seem to pay much heed to.

At what cost? The financial outlay would be horrendous. The disruption too would cause horrendous economic hardship.

As long as the council dafties can get their taxis into the bus lanes they won't care.

Or do the dafties use public transport at night like citizens have to do?

I'd make the fuckers use public transport at all times. If they want a taxi let them pay for it like others have to.

I think that's one of the appeals of the Roseburn path. Links all the way from Crewe Toll to Haymarket. Saves cash and disruption.

Yeah I used to run it regularly, a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It actually goes all the way to Ocean Terminal and beyond. To take something like that away would be a mistake IMO, and kind of pointless, taking away one green transport thoroughfare to create another. But I can see it happening.

The amount of cyclists I see using Gilmerton or Old Dalkeith Road are negligable.

Two main roads into the city ruined for a few cyclists.

Same with fairmilehead. Long steep roads either when you're going out or coming back. Who'd a thunk it?

The Western General is just around the corner from Granton. There's a perfectly good bus service anaw. Waste of fuckin money and probably cost billions.

What aboot that bit of Gilmerton Road over fae Morrisons Jimmy? WTF is that all about? Probs got something tae dae wi that bus stop opposite getting demolished the other day.

Aye they narrowed the main road so cyclists can head out from the scheme onto Gilmerton Road.

Causes a bottleneck when the roads busy. So three buses with 30 folk on each take ages to get hame so a daftie in lycra can cross the road

The people I know who live in and around Granton all use the Western General .anyway
They would be cheaper building a dedicated cancer ward at the Royal and a whatever they do only at the Royal ward at the Western. And nae fuckin hassle.

The Western doesn't provide all of the services that the Royal Does.

It wouldn't be feasible to run most specialisms in the two hospitals at the same time. That's on a medical basis rather than a financial or any other reason.

The maternity unit and sick kids is at ERI not all services are available at the Western.
