Edinburgh film festival and cinemas cease trading

This is sad news.I probably used the Filmhouse more than any other cinema.Art house cinemas are now few and far between. That'll mean the end of cutting edge cinema and more Fast and Furious dross.

Your dead right Moaty
Hard to believe the Filmhouse will be no more.
It was an education going to see movies and documentaries there in my 20's and 30's
I suppose it's closing is partly the fault of folk like me for no longer going to see movies there.

Great shame. I've been in the Filmhouse three times in the last six weeks - once just for lunch. Will miss it greatly.
Admittedly, it hasn't been busy since before Covid.

I was 17 when I first visited the Filmhouse, went to see Betty Blue. I had just became a part of a new friendship group, who invited me along. The opening scene is pretty explicit and afterwards I was pretending to like the film for its artistic qualities, trying to impress my new friends, but I was really wanting to talk about the barry tits that Beatrice Dalle had.
Used to visit the place loads in my student days, from art house to watching an afternoon of Warner Brother cartoons.

I note the company that own it have only had it for 12 years. When I used to attend it they had masses of patrons who helped support it.
Can't help but feel if they had made it public what they needed for the Edinburgh Filmhouse to survive, past users would have helped. Even if it was paying a lump sum up front to attend screenings over the next year. Problem is they should have appealed 6 months ago before they were totally up shit creak. Perhaps someone will buy the Edinburgh part of the business who doesn't want to make it into flats or a boutique hotel.

My arty pal (regular attender) and I were chatting about this last night and he reminded me they'd just applied for planning permission for a new swanky building in Festival Square which with costs probably tipped them over the edge. Madness.

Can't get my head round them planning to spend £50 million on a new building and now a short time later can no longer afford to run 2 wee cinemas.
Something stinks.
