Cozy was some drummer. Seen him with both Rainbow and the Michael Schenker Group in the early 80's. A tragedy that he died at only 50 in the way he did.
I first saw him back in 1970 backing Tony Joe White at the Isle of Wight Festival, then a few times subsequently. Good drummer.

He crashed his car while doing 100mph+, over the limit , no seatbelt on and on the phone at the time. What stuck in my mind at the time and remember to this day was the person at the other end of the phone said to journalists that his last word were ' Oh shit ! .Very James Dean.

/www.drummerworld.com/Videos/genekrupasingsingsing37.html first ever recorded drum solo with the benny goodman orchestra 1937.

I was lucky enough to see him and Rush on the Signals tour , again around 82 at Ingleston . All the big rock bands of that era had Edinburgh dates on their tours.
Saw that show as well. Also saw them at the Glasgow Apollo in 1980 on the Permanent Waves tour and Ingliston again in 1981 on the Moving Pictures tour. 40 year anniversary tour at the SECC in 2004 as well.

Karen Carpenter was well rated as a drummer

This guy seems to think he is too

Thought you were older.

Can't see any mention of Ringo Starr, surely one of the most underrated drummers ever. Left handed, curiously he played a right handed drum kit. My fav and reportedly also his fav performance was on the b side to Paperback Writer, Rain.

Was it not John Lennon who said of him “Best drummer in the world? He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles”

The best ever as far as I am concerned.

I think Bonham just nicks it, but to be honest I think you're splitting hairs, so different from most " Rock drummers" but they both studied Jazz and the like where you were getting fills that rock drummers didn't normally do. I also think Ian Paice of deep purple was a great drummer that often gets over looked.

Today in 1978 my favourite drummer died. There arent many (probably only one) drummers I can recognise by their sound - Keith I can. I can hear a track and think that sounds like Moon drumming on that track, and following investigation it usually is. RIP.

And as for non-rock drumming Steve White is up there - this is a fantastic example of his work, especially love the bit at 3:30 to 4:10
