One thing we can learn from Ukraine is the use of drones in the modern world. I can envisage drones being extensively used for search and rescue missions, firefighting incidents, transporting medical supplies and urgent packages. The list of useful transportation is immense once battery life and navigation aids improve

Pretty widely used now Davy. My youngest was a drone pilot for a few years, and mainly used drones for surveying. Everything from power lines/towers to oil rigs, to inside massive oil tankers.
They are often used in 'swarms' too, not just in military use, but to check out huge areas in one exercise.

Science fiction come true!

I quit working offshore 10 years ago and they were already in use there by inspection companies, negating the need for abseiling/rope access in a lot of cases.

One of those technologies that will bring both good and bad.

The possibilities for warfare and surveillance are pretty chilling. Forget for the moment the plane type things or even the wee flying bombs used in Ukraine, and imagine swarms of mosquito sized things that can target people with a given profile; women, men, black, white, whatevs and deliver a fatal ‘bite’.

On the happier side, one of these things that creep up on you is the way that inexpensive productions like Hibs promotional videos can deliver things Hollywood couldn’t until recently. Whole new kinds of shots have become common place in films, like zooming up to or down from a Birds Eye view, or zooming through cityscapes. Until recently this was the preserve of big budget cgi, now it’s everywhere.

As an aside Davy, battery power is the grail in tech. It’s simply not moved like everything else and shows no sign of doing so.

There was a time when it was said that Tesla was really just a vehicle for Musk to pursue battery tech because any breakthrough would make his current fortune look like pocket change. If that was ever true I suspect he too has failed, given that his emphasis seems all AI now.

If the battery in your phone had advanced like every other part of it you wouldn’t need to charge it for months or years at a time. But it hasn’t. It’s the great blocker in technology. For which I thank it :coffee1:
