Politics Digital ID

Yeah I'm not a fan. Sounds like the beginning of a lot of shite.
How long until it extends to other areas?
Can't enter places without scanning to say you've been there, can't travel, can't shop..

Also, why do the politicians not need to have one?
There'll be ID's getting hacked and stolen left right and centre.

One of those sounds like a great idea in theory, but the government is the last organization on the planet you could trust to deliver it.

I don't think they will be easy to clone @Dub - there is stuff you can do with cryptography that should prevent that.

They are, however, a dreadful idea. Some other countries have them but few countries in the developed world are as authoritarian and hostile to freedoms as is Britian.

Its going to be abused.

You better believe it.

Genuine question, I can see why some are sceptical but is it any different to the ID most of us already carry. If you have a passport they know where you’ve travelled to, if you have a store card they know your shopping habits ,if you carry a mobile phone they can see where you are and where you’ve been. If you go to the bank to withdraw a large amount of YOUR money they ask why you want it. Most of us carry at least one of those forms of ID.

It's choices for me

If I choose to drive then I have to have a licence

If I choose to travel to different countries I have to have a passport

I think when you take away that choice, and you will be punished for not complying, it's a pretty authoritative road we're travelling and it scares me.

Get what you're saying but I don't see a problem with everybody having to carry some form of ID, especially in this dangerous world we're living in.

I think it's all good when you can choose these things. Spy on me if you want.

But if they start being able to control what you can and can't do through them then there's an issue for me. (I know it's no there yet, but it'll come)

I agree with you on this (Westminster) government not being able to deliver it effectively without the need for brown envelopes being scattered about the place.

I do think the idea of a digital ID card is a good one. Apparently Estonia of all places has one that works well and who amongst the conspiracy theorists on here would have thought that?

Aye Estonia's 69 million population would've a good nation to base an ID on.

Gott in Himmel there are not 69 million folk in Estonia!!

Na great idea. Plod would never abuse said ID cards or beat you up if you never had it.

🤔

I'm not sure 'they' would be able to control what you can and cannot do anymore than 'they' can do at the moment. However they would be able to do it more effectively.

Access to the NHS would only be access to those who have the right to use the NHS.

ID for jobs for a beefed up version of the NI card. There's an issue of the employer employing the person they think they're employing. The ID card protects the employer.

I used to work in a pretty big recruitment team for a public organisation. The recruitment process included a test, a medical and an interview. The number of times we had folk sitting the test for their pals and even the interview was significant enough for us to introduce cross checks.

Withdrawal of passport, driving license and that sort of stuff only happens to people for a reason. That won't change but it will be more difficult to circumvent with an ID card than it is just now.

Jack do you believe that any non ID carrying person would be left laying in the street then?

Or would the state try and recoup the money?

Because is the NHS not due millions of £'s from folk who have run up a bill and bolted?

I suppose they could take the money from the foreign aid budget though.

Is this the "Poll Tax" for the 21st Century?

Where I live has ID cards etc but everyone has one etc and anon and as a physical card it works fine (I have never been asked for my "papers" in the decade I have been here) The difference is that here it is to grant access to things whilst this Digital ID is to deny access fundamentally and the design philosophy will no doubt follow that essential starting point. Meaning that it is massively open to abuse. Also this looks like a disaster waiting to happen even just because it is UK Government IT. I expect Capita will be a successful bidder to the surprise of no one....

There is no institutional history of this form of ID in the UK and I would bet that it will erode civil liberties whilst not making any sort of dent in any illegal activity.

I’m not really opposed to some general ID as it would save looking for old bills to prove who I am but given recent history when Dom Cummings snuck all sort of dodgy shit into the NHS app, I’m wary.

Only reason it's dangerous....is cause there an incompetent bunch of buffoons running the show.

Stop endless mass migration.
Look for a solution with Ukraine.
Stop arming Israel.

If we did these....Things would be ok.
Have you got your id card here in NL, Ryan?

We have had an id card here for yonks but it is optional.

Used instead of a passport to travel within the EU normally but is also valid as fairly cheap legal id for all kinds of domestic services.

Mainly for those who never travel outside the EU, I guess. Looks and feels like a e-driving license.

But myself? Never had one, just call me Dougie-2-passports-Haarlem 😇😁

Two different things there.

Emergency care for visitors to these shores has always been in place, just as we can expect emergency care abroad should we be knocked down or whatever.

Medical tourism is a problem. Maybe not as big a problem as some make out but its costing the UK millions as you say, and in some cases denying or delaying people treatment who are entitled to it.

The so called NHS covid app was never part of the NHS in England, or anywhere else, for all the dodgy reasons you'd expect of the torys and some folks new golden boy, Dominic Cummings.
