Former Hearts, Tottenham, Derby County and Scotland legend Dave Mackay has died aged 80.

My dad, who was as big a Hibs fan as you could get, always said he was a fantastic player when he captained Hearts in probably their greatest ever team in the late 1950's. He said he was as hard as nails but combined that with having great ability and was a natural leader. He went on to be an all time Spurs great, and also played for Derby as well as managing them to the league Title in the early 70's. One of the greatest footballing sons of Edinburgh there has ever been.

RIP Dave

When the greatest footballer to walk the earth says Dave McKay was the hardest player he ever played against, nothing else needs to be said. Great player & great Scot.

Before my time, but when my Dad (A Famous Five witness) says he was "Truly Fantastic" that`s good enough for me.

Sleep soundly DM.

The Dave Mackay story I like best is the one when a ref tried to send him off. Mackay just refused to go and just played on as if nothing had happened.

I can remember not too long ago watching some old games on telly and there were some classic tussles between Dave Mackay and Billy Bremner - back in the days when men were men.

RIP.

Very sad news. Had the pleasure of spending time in his company a couple of years ago. Great stories and a real gent.

Sleep tight DM.

Dave Mackay lived in a Nottingham village local to me. I had the pleasure of meeting him and can confirm he was a gentleman and a lovely, friendly guy. He had at one time managed Forest and this was how he came to root locally as many who pass through our football clubs here do.

Dave was an elite footballer, one of the greatest in my view. Not only was he as hard as nails but he was incredibly skilled. At Tottenham they used to have a skill test in training which employed hitting a spot on the wall with the ball - only that great technician Glenn Hoddle ever matched him.

After a stellar time at White Hart Lane, Brian Clough's fantastic partner, Peter Taylor stole the older Mackay from Spurs to be their captain at Derby County and his leadership and greatness took them into the old First Division. He was their lieutenant on the pitch and was probably as instrumental as anyone in their own successful careers - a master stroke.

When I think of Scotland greats of my time, Dave Mackay is always up there in the forefront along with Denis Law and a couple of others. A superb and legendary player.

He was my mate's uncle and I was fortunate enough to meet him once. I just knew I was in the company of someone special - quiet-manner, polite but very easy to talk to. Sadly the old-saying's true - they just don't make them like him any more !! RIP DM
