I was reading a very interesting article about ferry flying. What is it? It's when pilots fly light aircraft over distances they're not supposed to. Like a Cessna get fixed here but sold to an American who wants it delivered. So they need to get it over the Atlantic Ocean to them. Very dangerous but also very adventurous. It's a good read. (Linky below) Anyway it said on it the shortest stretch of water crossing the Atlantic is 700 miles and these plane only do typical 200-400 miles at a time! Edge of the seat stuff.
I wanted to see the route they use so I went to good old Google maps and have a deek. Im mapping their journey from Wick to Reykjavik to Greenland - either to Narsarsuaq in the south or further north to Kulusuk - on to Bangor, Maine. When I was looking for Kulusk I started wandering around Baffin Bay and just kept heading North for no particular reason. Then at the very top of Canada I spotted a place called Alert. Ooh what's this?
Never heard of it before?... Alert eh? :hmmm... That's a strange name...Im gonna click it and see what's there?
So I did and do you know what's there? Well, I'll tell ye what's there.....Only a big massive happy sitting Canadian Smoke Monster!!!
