I've seem more than a few things in my time mocking red state America contrasting it with the swinging democrat cities. This article, provides the flipside - of the horrendous conditions that can exist in 'blue states' outside the city, the ghastly welfare trap, and terrible plight of blacks in particular.

This is a long and sober piece - grim rather than sensationalist - but worth a read;

Some of the stats alone are horrendous - since Rahm Emanuel left his role as Obama's mandelson / Damien mcbride he has presided over a chicago that is some months more murderous than Iraq. But even there - where you have a 1. In 99 chance of suffering a violent attack each year, pales with other places in Illinois where it is 1 in 20.

Horrific.

I got as far as 'Pat Quinn is the gubernatorial John Wilkes Booth' and the rest is behind a pay wall.
