Gender identity issues being played out here.Jane Austin is one of my least favourite authors and is a step down from the mighty Charles Darwin in terms of stature. Elizabeth Fry wasn't a towering choice either.

I can't recall, though, who if anyone is on the Scottish notes (BoS, RBS and Clydesdale). Dig out your waltes and have a look for me?

Don't see why Darwin is being bumped to tell you the truth-could Jane Austin not go on another denomination of bank note?:dunno:

I can't seem to find a lot of information about her but Mary Young certainly seems like she should be better known (http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/1656487).

Jane Haining seems like a similar, slightly more well known case. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Haining)

I would much rather see people (not just women) like this on bank notes than the likes of Churchill who is a far more of a divisive figure than his "publically voted" status of "history's greatest briton" makes out.

Depending on which birth certificate you believe, she was born in London or Hitchin to English parents, you need to go a fair bit back in history to find any Scottish blood in her!

deary me,don't you know your history young lady?:-P
