No, not a men's health thread...

Just wondering if anyone (a) is as ancient as me and remembers when footballs were composed of a leather casing with an inflatable bladder inside, and (b) can confirm thus was called a filly? Or something like that?

A link to a dictionary would be nice cos haven't found it exactly so far.

Memory jolted by checking what the rim of a bike (don't ask) was called in Dutch. I had come across the word before in the context of bikes but never quite knew it was the rim of a wheel.

In Dutch it's velg and I saw one link to a phillie but further searches were rendered impossible by the fkn Philadelphia Phillies muddying the waters 😞

But I remember leather phillies, now I need to know if it@s related to velg!

We used to play next to a canal, and when the fillie went in the water and subsequently retrieved, nobody would risk heading it.
 
I remember when I was in like P5 walking to primary and found an old leather ball outside the ticket office at Easter Road.
Nabbed it thinking it was an old leather football.
We spent the week using it in the playground before someone told us it was a medicine ball 😅

Genuinely thought that's what the old timers played with. Couldn't understand how it was possible.

Looked like the picture.

I was just thinking that the current concerns about brain damage from heiders probs apply equally to new and old balls, as it were 😉

The old balls were heavy so a lot of mass but little momentum as they couldn't be kicked as far/hard as new ones.

Whereas the new ones are light so little mass but plenty momentum as they can go really fast/far as they smack full into your fizzog from a free kick at the edge of the box.

So nothing to worry about, move on please :coffee1::sm113:

Not sure on that but iirc ,the black and white hexagons were introduced for TV as it stood out on black & white telly!???
Late 60's maybe?

Only got channel 3 and channel 10.

I remember first getting a colour set, most of the programmes had been made in black and white, but I could watch the ads in colour!

Definitely a 'Casey' in Nottingham - or should I say 'caseh'. :giggley:

Used to get pretty scuffed up on the winter evenings playing in the road under streetlights.
