Anyone Own a VW Golf?

Is it not the normal wee lever inside the door next to the actual catch ?

That's what I reckoned. Worked this time but the last one I hired didn't work.

Seriously considering buying one soon. Seems to be a reasonable choice in the car supermarkets - if a bit on the high mileage. Deisel or petrol best?

Solid cars i reckon , GTI would be fun Turbo Diesel would be sensible (and fun if its anything like my mates Audi A4 TD)

Dont own a golf but wifey has an A3 and I drive an Octavia for work, both are based on the same platform as the golf so pretty similar.

The standard TDi versions are competent enough even fully loaded. if you like an extra bit of poke you may want to look at the GT TDI with the 170bhp engine, pretty bloody fast for a 2.0 oil burner (not sure if that engine is available in non GT badged cars or not)

The 2.0 FSI engine that is in the wifes A3 is lacking something I feel, although not slow and is perfectly capable of most overtaking manoeuvres I feel the turbo version would have been a better choice (though for her, upgrading from a 1.4 fabia it feels like an F1 car)

If you are not a badge snob then consider the Skoda Octavia, some decent savings to be made. The diesel Octavia VRS has the aforementioned 170bhp engine in it and wont set you back anywhere near as much as the VW or Audi equivalent.

PS don't forget that SEAT is also part of the VAG group and runs the same engines and components.

If it was me id say f**k it and go buy a mk2 golf or a UR quattro. I just feel alienated from the actual driving experience in new cars.
