Best form of his life. Playing very strong.
Easily best player on form in the world right now, only 900 odd points from being official world #1.
Mini tour of Asia, wins China open, wins Shanghai Masters, 10 games won, 2 titles and not a single set dropped
Djoko he is gunning for your crown

Agree that he's as good now as he's ever been. But in terms of gunning for Djoko's crown - that IMO has nothing to do with ATP titles and rankings points, but rather that has to do with exerting a stranglehold on Slams, and winning multiple times. By that metric, I reckon both Wawrinka and a fit Del Potro will also be gunning for that crown in the near future.

Muz really should have won the US Open, but fluffed it against an inferior player - Djokovic in his pomp would never have lost that match, he required "games of their lives" from only the most serious contenders.

I think Murray has taken a lot longer to mature than Nadal, Fed, Djoko, but he needs to take the opportunity and assert a similar period of dominance where it counts, as the other three did. He has time to do so, but it's diminishing. Nonetheless, he could still take another, what, six slams at least? Starting out with winning the Oz Open after making the final countless times.

Yeah fair points.
In terms of slams, they all got to finals earlier and played inferior players to win the final.
Murray was always meeting one of the best players ever. So it was hard to make that breakthrough.
I agree re Djoko making players play the game of their lives to win, his strength and stamina was out of this world.
Since his back op, Murray has went from strength to strength. Wawrinka et al are a fair bit behind Murray in points, 4500 or such like in 3rd place.
This really should be the year, well next year, that Murray wins Oz open.
His game is far stronger than it ever has been imo

Agreed. Right now, I feel like with the rest of the field as it is, he has the game to take all four slams at least once. That, for me, should be Murray's aim. Coupled with the Davis Cup and Olympic crowns, that would make him a uniquely decorated player.

It certainly would.
Im sure i heard earlier that he is the only tennis player ever to win 2 golds in the singles

Aye but its only been played 8 times since they brought it back in 1988. :giggle:

How many times has he played in it though? I'm guessing 2 so in reality it's 2 out of 2 for him. Others have probably played in at least 2 tourneys as well without achieving that.

2 out of 3. Beijing was not good.

Djokovic is about to lose 2300 points from his rolling total of points...if Andy wins in Vienna he can be No1 by Paris Masters in November.

How can Andy Murray become world number one in men's tennis?

Andy Murray
Andy Murray will attempt to become world number one by amassing ranking points in Vienna, Paris and London
"I believe I can get there. I definitely believe I can get there," said Andy Murray of the prospect of becoming the world's leading male tennis player.

"These last few months have proved that to me.

"I may never get another chance to be number one, so I'll give it my best shot to do that while I have the opportunity."

What's the deal?

Murray is closing in on the current world number one Novak Djokovic on the Emirates ATP Race to London. He trails the Serb by 915 points.

His comments that he "can get there" came in the wake of beating Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets to win the Shanghai Masters.

For that, the 29-year-old earned 1,000 ranking points. Djokovic lost to Bautista Agut in the semi-final.

Murray is in the form of his life. His win on Sunday was his 41st tournament victory, a tour-best 65th match victory of the season and his sixth trophy of the year, which ties a career best.

Spain's Bautista Agut, who was playing his first Masters final, said it was clear how much Murray wanted to secure the top spot.

"I think I can see it in his eyes," he said. "He's really focused on getting number one."

What's up next for Murray?

Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut
Roberto Bautista Agut felt he could see the hunger to win in Murray's eyes
The Scot has three tournaments left to play this year - the Vienna Open (24-30 October), which he won in 2014, the Paris Masters (31 October-6 November) and his eighth season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London (13-20 November), where the 200 points he won last year will drop off before the tournament begins.

Djokovic, a 12-time Grand Slam winner, is not scheduled to play until the event in Paris and will then compete in London.

A tournament win for Murray in Vienna would lift his points tally by 500 points, while Djokovic rests.

The Serb's 2,300 points from last year's Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour Finals drop off on 7 November.

Murray, who is defending 600 points from last season's efforts in Paris, will hope to have secured a fresh 1,000 points for winning in the preceding days in the city.

If Murray can win the tournaments in Vienna and Paris and Djokovic fails to reach the Paris final, the Scot will be at the rankings summit.

Thereafter, 1,500 points are up for grabs at London's O2 for an undefeated winner at the World Tour Finals.

If Murray wins Vienna he will go into paris 415 points behind.... if he wins he will gain 400 as he is defenfing 600...
Unsure how if Djoko gets to final he will still be #1 by 15 points? But djokos defenfing points?? Confuses me,

Ah ok cheers for that mate. I was guessing anyway but now I know :thumbgrin

Andy wins the Vienna Masters, dispatching Tsonga in the final :applause:

No 1 is very much still a possibility - more likely every week. Paris next :thumbgrin

Yeah, great win.
He's officially having his best year ever, 7 titles and 15 games unbeaten.
Talking with another bouncer earlier and he was saying he is a great shout for oz open at start of year... after losing 5 finals there, 10,11,13,15,16...i very much believe it too....
But in meantime lets get #1

Djoko beat in paris masters....
So....
All murray needs to do now is win in and he is world #1

Except that is no longer the case. He now only needs to get to the final. :thumbgrin

The need to win it was based on Novak going out at the SF stage. However, he has gone out at the QF stage :077:

Two wins away.

I reckon he'll win it anyway. Muz going #1 is only a fair reflection at the moment, IMO. He's the best player in the world right now, inarguably.

If he does it - and I really hope he does - then both him and his brother will have won a Grand Slam and been No1 in the same year. Add to that Andy's Olympics...what a phenomenal year for Team Murray.

Yeah I found that out later last night..
Quality stuff.
I wonder how the world finals in London will affect it?
Cant remember how Murray done in it last year, im sure Djoko won it?
Could it affect who will be world #1 for the year?

That's him number 1. Raonic has just pulled out from the semi final.

We'll done world number 1 Andy Murray.

Hope he wins it just ti make it the perfect scenario

And so it came to pass :thumbgrin

Hard hard match it was too...brilliant stuff from Andy.
Read also that if Djoko wins all his matches at London he will finish the year as world #1 regardless of what Andy does.
So to be #1 for year end Murray will probably heve to better Djoko, so todays win was of even greater importance.

Love that, even after the excitement of the No 1 ranking and another back to back Masters win, the Murray clan still manage to congratulate Chris Roberts, Joelle Murray and Hibs ladies on winning the Scottish Cup. Love it .

While not at his best, and Nishikori playing really well, Murrays fighting skills were superb yesterday. His determination while failing to match his previous form is admirable.
Scenario for world #1~

If Murray and Djokovic meet in SFs, the winner of that match will clinch No. 1
If they don’t meet in SFs, the player advancing farthest in the tournament will clinch No. 1
If they both lose in the semi-finals, Murray will clinch No. 1 unless Djokovic has a better round-robin record
But there are several other scenarios, including one that could see Murray finish No. 1 even if he misses the semi-finals, provided Djokovic doesn’t go 3-0 in round-robin play and the Serb doesn’t reach the final. If Murray misses the semi-finals, Djokovic can clinch by going 3-0 in group play or by going 2-1 and then winning his semi-final match.

Djokovic now got Goffin in his final round-robin match. He's had an absolute gift of a draw this year. I reckon he'll win it - Murray didn't look like the world #1 yesterday, it was like trench warfare for most of it. Maybe it was just a blip, but I'm sure he'd rather be playing David fcukin Goffin than Stan Wawrinka at this stage.

Agree with that, for the top seed Murray's group certainly seems to contain the tougher opponents this year. That said Djokovic could end up facing Wawrinka in the semis who he often struggles against.

Agree re Murrays form yesterday, but djoko has struggled as well and was losing the plot as well

Murray playing like the world No.1 just now against Wawrinka. 1 set up and 3-0 up in the second :applause:

Wins 2-0 sets.
Well done Murray, much better performance

That was INTENSE today. Ma nerves are fcuked.

Yeah his determination is admirable.
This form stamina and determination at the end of a long hard and best season ever for him is amazing

Great year for Hibbys and their supporters :thumbgrin :applause:

Fantastic from Murray, really can't emphasise how much i think he has earned it this year. He now has the steely determination to succeed along with his undoubted world class skill.
Hope we see him at ER over festive period...
