With AI on the horizon American schools are reintroducing ‘shop class’ which sounds to me like the old techy / woodwork classes we had but with better kit:

“In America’s most surprising cutting-edge classes, students pursue hands-on work with wood, metals and machinery, getting a jump on lucrative old-school careers. ”

Surely this is prudent and British education should follow suit, making this a lot more central than I expect it is today, as well as continued STEM emphasis?

Trades is right now probably the most reliable route to a decent living that will last. Leaving aside rocket scientist and superstar jobs, there are still jobs that pay more, sometimes a quite a bit more, but with a lot less guarantees as to their longevity. Plus as is obvious, not everyone wants to work in an office or is cut out to be an accountant (though accountants are gubbed).

I hope this is included in Labour’s review of education in rUK and that it gets more attention up here.
