Bummer.
My trendy pal had the "Affectionate Punch" album early on so I got to hear and loved The Associates right away.
Bought every album as it came out and remember having to go on a work course just after the sprawling third album "Perhaps" album was released. We stayed in dorms and I drove folk mental playing it all the time. There might even have been threats of violence from a Springsteen fan driven to distraction by the Billy MacKenzie vocals.
Mackenzie was obviously the main man but Alan Rankine made the interesting music while Billy did his thing over the top with his unique vocals. I suspect MacKenzie was hard going and I think Rankine left the band after the "Perhaps" album. He did production work and a couple of low key solo albums for the rest of the 80's before becoming a music lecturer.
As is the way with these things he eventually started getting interviewed about the Associates after MacKenzie died. He always came across as a kind egoless big guy and it's a great shame he has died at the relatively young age of 64.
RIP Alan
