So many of the people I looked up to as a teen seem to be leaving us. I just heard the sad news Alan Rankine died. He was a brilliant musician and a lovely guy.

Ach that’s rubbish.

I remember being absolutely gutted when Billy died.

RIP Alan

Bummer. The Associates one of my favourite groups.Party Fears Two was one of my put on records, before heading out clubbing.Nice guy too.RIP Alan.

In my first job, one of those £23.50 a week YOP schemes, my boss was the guy who was the Associates drummer. He didn’t fancy the big time so left the band.
I had all their albums and singles. Another part of my growing up gone 😢 RIP Alan

Bummer.
My trendy pal had the "Affectionate Punch" album early on so I got to hear and loved The Associates right away.
Bought every album as it came out and remember having to go on a work course just after the sprawling third album "Perhaps" album was released. We stayed in dorms and I drove folk mental playing it all the time. There might even have been threats of violence from a Springsteen fan driven to distraction by the Billy MacKenzie vocals.
Mackenzie was obviously the main man but Alan Rankine made the interesting music while Billy did his thing over the top with his unique vocals. I suspect MacKenzie was hard going and I think Rankine left the band after the "Perhaps" album. He did production work and a couple of low key solo albums for the rest of the 80's before becoming a music lecturer.
As is the way with these things he eventually started getting interviewed about the Associates after MacKenzie died. He always came across as a kind egoless big guy and it's a great shame he has died at the relatively young age of 64.
RIP Alan
