2034 World Cup

It was to be expected that with Qatar being the last hosts another dubious Middle Eastern regime would get a World Cup gig. FIFA are a deranged organisation - corrupt and rotten to the core.

Corruption in plain sight.

No one really cares though. Scotland won’t boycott, the commercial considerations are too massive.

It was the only bid apparently
Due to the rotation schedule it can't be North America as they have 2026.

Then in 2030 it's in south America, Europe and Africa at the same time.

So an Asian tournament was pretty much a stick on and what's the point in anyone else bidding against Saudi to fifa

OK... This won't be popular... I'm no expert on Saudi Arabia, but I have vaguely followed developments there for decades.
I know a couple of Filipinos - one male, one female - who've been there a while. Both have been in other Gulf states. Both much prefer conditions in Saudi.

It's Saudi Arabia.
Since what became the House of Saud kicked the Hashemite dynasty out of the Hejaz 100 years ago, they have been custodians of Mecca, Medina and the other sites associated with the founding of Islam.

Doing an impression of Brian Clough at Elland Road isn't an option.
"You can take all your pots and pans, your Quran, your Hadiths and chuck 'em all in the bin. They're not true. You've won all your wealth by cheating."
No can do.

Given the situation, I think Mohammed bin Salman has been impressive. He is an exceptionally ruthless and cynical ruler, but it's hard to see how he can increase the pace of reform at home.

Saudi Arabia's elevation from fringe Europa League contender to the Real Madrid of the International Bad Guys League is solely down to the comically botched "elimination" of Jamal Khashoggi. Even the Russians would be hard pushed to make such a feckin' hames of a hit.

Most countries bump-off people they regard as undesirables. We're not above it. I lived in Thailand from 1993 to 2008. I find it hard to believe that any relatively stable country on the planet has a secret service that liquidates more perceived troublemakers than Thailand's - inside & outside the country.
I can't remember seeing a single mention of any such activity in any Western media source, but then I've not been in The West since 1992. It wasn't exactly front page news in Thailand. I doubt it is these days either.

No matter what Saudi Arabia does, it will always be overshadowed by the admittedly rash aberration of slicing up a journalist - Satriale's Back Room style - in an embassy that anyone with a functioning brain would have realised was almost certainly heavily bugged.

When I think of Saudi and the Khashoggi debacle I always hear Ozzy Osbourne.
In an unusual moment of lucidity, Ozzy once said, "I could become President of the United States, discover a cure for cancer and win the Formula One world drivers' championship, but my obituary would still start with "He bit the head off a bat"!"

Regardless of all that, staging the World Cup in Saudi Arabia is batshit crazy... But how many years have gone by since Gordon Strachan made his comment about morality? Football hasn't discovered any since then.

Not that bothered, my passion for fitbaw mostly died when VAR was introduced. Aye I'll still watch it and enjoy the games now and again, but the passion and heart has been ripped out the game.

Good entertaining post 👍

When I think - as I sometimes do - upon Saudi Arabia, my mind strays to a tight-clad Olivia NJ.
