Towards the end of September, comedian Bill Maher provoked social-media outrage by asking a simple question: why does the coverage of Gaza get so much mainstream-media attention when the persecution of Christians in Nigeria gets almost none?

‘They are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria’, he said on his talk show, Real Time:

‘They’ve killed over 100,000 since 2009. They’ve burned 18,000 churches… These are the Islamists, Boko Haram. This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza. They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country.’

Glad to be out of working in that part of the world, the security they put in place seemed to get worse with each visit, but from everything I was reading the risk was increasing. It went from the risk of being kidnapped for ransom to the risk of being kidnapped to be flogged on to Boko Haram. The Northern states are proper bandit country.

I started a thread on this a while back. Little interest and even anger at it being raised. I see you have inexplicably got a thumbs down already.

No once cares.
 
The thumbs down was expected. Some mass murders seem to be worse than other mass murders for some people.
 
I think mass murder is wrong no matter who carrys it out. But some mass murders get more attention.

Or do you see that differently?

I've seen you post about the murders in Gaza but nowt about the murders in Nigeria.

No. Martin popped that in because rightly or wrongly there is far more attention given to Israel, the state, than there is to Islamic terrorists. Never once did you mention Nigerian Christians in your worry spot until he did that.

I think that highlights the reasons behind the difference in outrage really.

A western style democracy should be held to higher standards than terrorists in the most lawless areas of a developing country.

The comparison to an Islamic terrorist group killing Christians is just another attempt to make criticism of Israel about religion rather than what it is for most people - criticism of a government.

Here's the rub; There are many fundamentalists within all the Abrahamic religions. A point which gets lost in the shoite.

Yes, and nobody likes Boko Haram. They are not our trading partners. They are not international allies. We don't sell them weapons. The Israel situation is totally different.

How would protest change what Boko Haram are doing?
 
Perhaps it’s never on the news, but that doesn’t stop people like jimmy and me and others from caring about what goes on 🤷‍♂️
 
I don't think protests would.

And the protests against Israel have only led to Starmer recognising a Palestine state because he fears losing votes.

And although Hamas wanted a square go with Israel which they got I now think Israel have went too far.

The protest marches held over the world have not changed anything in my opinion apart from politicians eyeing up the potential loss of votes.

There are millions of folk here who although they don't like what they are seeing over in Gaza have bigger concerns about the cost of living crisis that is happening here.
