And who verifies BBC Verify?

I thought - perhaps wrongly - they were fact checkers rather than journos so quite why they are doing unreliable journalism is surprising to me to begin with (on that count if no other). Mind you much of the wider ‘fact checking’ industry has drifted in editorialism so I’m probably just being naive again.

I'm a big fan of Snopes.
Not infallible, but tends to issue corrections where it has gone a bit astray.
Ryan would do well to use it.

Can't read it as it's behind a paywall. Does it mention the irony of Verifier in Chief Marianna Spring lying on her CV?
I wouldn't trust BBC Verify as far as I could throw it when they constantly refer to male rapists, murderers and sex offenders as "she" if they claim a female identity. This being a prime example:

5% of the articles they have published have needed corrected or binned which is apparently a very high ratio for a news organisation never mind the beeb’s ministry of truth.

You can imagine the sort of thing;

- in their haste to boost racialist narratives, claiming photos showed carloads of Asians being attacked when in fact the passengers were white east Europeans.

- publishing exposes of the racist insurance industry then having to admit it was all bollocks - as I say I thought they were meant to be fact checkers rather than journos; the bbc already have bings of journos to bring us the narrative .

- taking a very particular interest in Israel.

Etc

Look at this headline then see how they casually slip the truth in near the end of the article.

I was looking for it and still my eye jumped over it on first skim.

I understand there is well established journalist protocol for getting key facts in early paras as few make it to the end of pieces. They are utilising tools of their trade, consciously or unconsciously.

As Andrew Doyle explains here, this is a conscious choice. There is no law requiring news organisations to use wrong-sex pronouns for criminals.

To be fair to the Beeb et al, I think of this problem in this way: if we were in Riyadh or Tehran we wouldn't expect the media not to be influenced by local religious tenets.

The fact that we aren't supposed to be like those places and increasingly are, is the greater issue.

Then again you could argue that the BBC are the mullahs as much as having to comply with the mullahs.

The frustrating thing is that supposedly "anti-woke" outlets like the Daily Heil and The Torygraph do it too. It's definitely a new secular religion. John Gray discusses it in his latest book The New Leviathans.

A new revivalist cult perhaps, but as you've no doubt gathered, I think the whole history of the left is.

The achievement of utopia through a millenniarian struggle that conquers nature; legislation from faith articles; a route to salvation for the faithful; prophets and scriptures, saints and martyrs, but also apostates and heretics, crusaders and inquistors; devotees rather than voters; hymns and sacred symbols.

It's not really playing the same game as conservatism, say.

The cult are firebrands preaching a hot gospel in a tent, but the church is broader and more ancient.

Or the Ummah, perhaps; actually a closer template.

Hi Elon Musk. I'm Sancho Panza. I post anonymously on the fan forum of a Scottish football team. I've asked you repeatedly for an interview. I'm on holiday in the States at the moment and would love to chat with you about the US presidential election so I can post it in the Cowshed...

Quite apart from any political affiliations, is this now what passes for professional? Posting passive-aggressive requests on a public forum seems a bit ... well, unprofessional.

I see it's open season on fact checkers right now (I wonder why)? But I think it's entirely appropriate for a journalist to 'doorstep' Musk on the platform where he spreads so much disinformation. She does actually work for a significant news organisation and he has been blanking her. So I don't see it as unprofessional at all. And given Musk is hardly the embodiment of business professional behaviour, I think it's just fine.

This is the BBC @aggie.

Musk should be grateful for the opportunity to pronounce to a good few dozen senescent 68ers through such a hallowed portal.

On a more serious note, I wonder if the beeb crew have any awareness at all of how completely 'not at the races' they are.
