VAR and Scottish Football

I find it rather surprising that there has been no obvious review or public discussion anywhere about the impact of VAR on the game in Scotland based on the evidence of last season. The introduction of VAR last season, (the biggest thing that has happened to scottish football for many years), and the consequences it has had on the game up here for me are worthy of serious assessment and debate, and I would have thought that a proper review of how VAR has impacted the game as a spectacle and what changes and tweaks might be required in order to make the game in Scotland a much more enjoyable spectacle.

I've said before I don't like VAR and feel it's introduction and more importantly the way it has been interpreted by officials has been poor in Scotland. Hibs have suffered from it, and so have other clubs. I expected to see some sort of announcement about possible changes in the way referees and VAR officials interpret the new technology we now have and is here to say. A review must surely have been taken by the SPFL based on what we witnessed last season. The things which concern me the most are the following;

1/ The huge increase in players being sent off. I can't remember a time in all the years I have watched scottish football where we have seen so many red cards being flashed by referees. Many then overturned. A number have came about after VAR checks, but IMO referees are far too quick to send players off. This has reduced the game to a farce. Last season it almost became a rarity for a match to finish with 11 against 11. This cannot possibly be a good thing ? We want to make the game more enjoyable surely ? IMO the fans are being short changed here. They deserve to see a serious review and the correct changes being introduced to reduce the number of red cards.

2/ The equally huge increase in penalty awards. For me, far too many penalties are being awarded in matches for utter nonsense. I've banged on for many years about my dislike of the handball in the penalty box rule, and now the farce of this rule has taken on epic proportions, not helped by the yelping TV pundits with far too much to say. So many penalties are being awarded for the ball striking a players hand at high speed where there is absolutely nothing the player can do about it. IMO no defender deliberately handles the ball. All this guff about the arm being in an unnatural position is just ridiculous. I know this is the current rules and the refs have to abide by them but we are getting baying crowds screaming for penalties whenever the ball hits any player in the box and refs again under huge pressure from VAR officials to check screens. Matches in many cases are won and lost by this ridiculous rule.

3/The offside rule. I'm glad we have seen some announcement about this being changed for next season to make it less likely for goals to be chaulked off when only a small part of the body is slightly offside. I just expected to see more clarity on the other things which for me are slowly reducing the game of football to some sort of pantomime act instead of the glorious game it can be at it's best.

Would be interested to hear other fans views on all this.

I think VAR, or its concept is broadly good.

Its implementation was broadly good.

There was too many mistakes though often rank bad ones - but when it works well, like it did last game of the season it works really well.

The lack of a penalty at ibrox was farcical mind, as was the penalty at Tynecastle.

The biggest problem with VAR [apart from Hibs seemingly suffering more than most other teams] is that the VAR officials are the same inadequate/cheating referees that haunted the game only this time they are behind closed doors rather than on the pitch. The SPFL/SFA should have cleared the lot out and imported officials who didn't have skin in the game although, of course, all refs deny they support one team or another. The the rangers are still getting decisions in their favour.

VAR is a great idea and long overdue as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately we suffer by having incompetent/biased operators. It wasn't until well into the season that I found out these video referees aren't in the stadium and in fact might not even be in the same city. That being the case it would be ideal to ship the job out of Scotland altogether. Using for example English operators would go a long way to removing the bias we have to put up with week on week.

Said a few times on here by a few folk Dub. Same useless refs make the same useless decisions. Unfortunately them not being in the stadium husnae stopped their bias towards the 2 cheeks and I'm no holding out much hope that will change next season.

I cant decide if that was the worst or the Ross County equaliser.

In essence we get shared by refs in big games and var should have sorted that but no the penalty at inbox and Marshall barged into the net are missed as was the penalty that the Dons didn't get at ibrox. Nothing has changed. Unless we get refs outwith the usual suspects we will continue to have blatant decisions go against us. Unbelievably frustrating but plus ca change.

Well well well
Referees impartial? Honest? Integrity at heart?
No one can say refs don’t cheat se all know it happens all the time up here in favour of their favoured two bigots.
EPL they say is full of integrity and impartial refs they say, well unless the referee is the VAR officials mate 🙈
Yet they expect us to believe up here in the outrageously biased and bigoted set up , yep, rangers fans reffing rangers games, that it simply does not happen..
Obviously with this example it doesn’t necessarily mean nothing up here, but it does show to claim they are all infallible is utter bullshit. Far far too many obvious corrupt, sorry errors, happen to make it believable.. Yet they bring in VAR up here and use the very same corrupt, sorry, honest mistaken refs to do very thing that was designed to stop these corrupt, sorry there i go again, honest mistaken refs from making corrupt 🙈 mistakes..
Of course it happens, but doing nothing is exactly what is expected up here as it is obviously honest mistakes… but in benefit of only 2 teams. But that’s their aim.

Well said, that man!

I was only paying half attention to it and didn't realise the goal was chalked off till half time lol. Didn't the hun dafties cheer the refs var decision? I thought that meant it was a goal and went back to my ipad
Yes they did 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The shoulder to shoulder v can’twell in the box. What I mean is rangers would have got it against everyone else bar Celtic if they were a goal down with minutes to go at home
Maeda's positioning was perfect for the perfect shoulder to shoulder.
Thought it was an easy decision for VAR.

You're right they did cheer, probably thought he wouldn't dare chalk it off.
