Went to see Catfish and The Bottlemen after the game yesterday and decided to take the tram for the first time.

Murder. Crushed and takes far too long. On the way back was even worse with trams supposedly every two minutes but easily 15-20. If you’re stating you’re putting on extra trams then get it done. The public transport in this country is shite and after an event has to be the worst in Europe.

I appreciate what you're saying.

When was it you were travelling? I don't think the trams were/are ever scheduled every 2 minutes. The best I think is 7 minutes during peak times. The through the night trams during the festival are 20/30 minutes.

Just imagine all these people trying to get anywhere on buses!

I think judging public transport in Edinburgh during the festivals is a bit daft. I go up town (from close to the stadium) on a Saturday normally about 6 o'clock after the football crowd has mostly dispersed. My usually empty 35 was rammed by the time it reached the Hibs Club stop. A journey that normally takes 25 minutes took an hour and 10 minutes. It's mental during the festivals.

Edit. And one of my "locals" has been so busy during the festivals I've not even been able to get in! :grrr:

Edinburgh can't cope with the ever increasing numbers of tourists.

While I've just engaged into rant mode 😆 These so called student accommodation places change their name during the festivals to "x hotel" and charge more than £250 A NIGHT! Student accommodation my arse!

I think Edinburgh's bus service is great.

The trams are fine as well for the extremely limited service they provide. They're 'not worth it' and were a daft investment but they're here now and if you happen to want to go somewhere along the route, the Scottish office's airport shuttle service works fine.

I think the OP is right we are bad at handling events though. And Jack is right that overtourism is bawsing up Edinburgh. Going about the town lately and seeing one poster or another advertising some Oxbridge sort staging a show airing their neuroses really does make me question whether it's worth it. Get the fringe in the bin.

All fair points

The capacity is so bad though. As EGB says, the buses in Edinburgh are great but after an event….jeez oh. In the queues last night I heard the staff say we’ve lost control and they pretty much gave up

Who can blame them ? You’ve got young guys and girls trying to chaperone thousands of drunk folk

Trams get you through the town so much quicker than a bus, never had an issue getting on or off them.

Although I've never used them during the festival.

Mum works at the west end, busses to top of leith walk, jumps on and gets through the town 3x quicker than staying on the bus.

I think it's a great bus service too, certainly the best I've experienced in the UK. We have an excellent one here but I'd say Edinburgh's is better.

The trams I'm always divided on. We have a service that loses a lot of money year on year which seems unsustainable indefinitely. Many believe this is because of the amount of people who travel on it without paying since conductors were taken away. It's been called a vanity project of the local Council but I can understand why they wanted to build it. In spite of all this, there seems a deeper intent to build more lines ultimately. The main problem with our tram service, apart from the major one of losing money, is the poor reliability. There never seems to a be a week go by when the trams don't grind to a halt due to technical problems or accidents. They can be very uncomfortably overcrowded in busy times too. As against that, when they're operating properly there often a tram every three minutes.

I use it every time i go to ER. Yesterday was far busier on the way home, probably due to the gig at Ingleston. The amount of young women on their way there was noticeable.

I find it an excellent service tbh.

I never knew they don't have conductors anymore. Been on a few trams that were rammed and the conductor would have no chance of checking tickets anyway.

Yep, some people would look to see where the conductor is on the tram, get on at the other end and travel for 2-3 stops. They do sometimes have inspectors come on but some just get ejected and simply wait for the next one a few minutes later.

I have an acquaintance who is a conductor on the Edinburgh trams. They're still there.

Was at a Man City evening game in April, and a long metro queue shifted in no time.

Was in Edinburgh the other week and got a train in and out. Was ridiculous, hourly for some reason, and absolutely rammed.

Just to clarify, regarding having no conductors, I was referring to the Nottingham trams, which I was talking about in my original post. not Edinburgh trams. Nottm, trams used to have conductors but haven't for some years.

I’ve remarked on the Manchester trams before. I was working down there while they were extending the route. You could see the progress month by month. The contrast with our clownshow was remarkable.

Never been on a tram that never had a conductor on it. I had become a fan since it got me from Leith to Walter Scott statue quickly. But did make a mistake when Taylor Swift was in town.I got on and it quickly became rammed to the the rafters. I’m slightly claustrophobic so I had to get off at Macdonald Road.

Google Cleithrophobia (I'm not joking) sounds more like that. Majority of claustrophobics are actually cleithrophobic.

I never understood why in Edinburgh they basically closed the full extended route from York Place to Newhaven when they were laying the track instead of doing it in sections.

The obvious answer was to piss off as many drivers/people as possible.

Sorry, that was probably me no paying attention:lookaround:

Got the tram home yesterday after the game. Missed one by a minute and the next one was another 20 mins
It was absolutely rammed and boiling hot too. Stopped at practically every lights between stops too. Took almost 50 to get to the west of the city
