Suez Crisis

Is anyone expecting a parcel from the Far East? Its going to be delayed!

I sailed up the Suez Canal a couple of years ago on my last cruise. Fascinating so it is. I got up early as we entered from the south and it took pretty much all day to reach the Mediterranean. We were part of a convoy, shadowed by a military helicopter all the way and where we were close to a road there was a couple of police cars tracking us and moving on any vehicles that had stopped to watch. Watching folk in their wee fishing boats casting their nets, farmers working their fields and even a camel train! Exactly what I'd expected from films and documentaries but fascinating to see.

Some bits are one-way and I kid you not there's 'traffic lights' to control the ships!

Anyway at the moment there's one of these huge container ships has got itself wedged across the canal, grounded on both banks - its only deep enough in the middle for these ocean monsters. This one is the length of 4 football pitches, twice the size of my cruise ship, and is carrying over 18,000 shipping containers. If your parcel isn't on it it might be one of the 300+ other ocean monsters now caught in what must be the biggest traffic jam the world has ever seen!

The satellite images of the traffic jam is mental.

Even if they get that one sorted, everything behind it is held up for a mental long time.
All ships going through get taken over by a local captain to navigate the canal.
Theres only so many of them, so it'll be an age before it's sorted.

The alternative route only adds on about 10 days!

Questions need to be asked as to why it happened? As jack says these ships are taken over by "pilots"

Was this particular one corrupt and caused this to happen? How does a giant ship suddenly go at an angle and get stuck, I smell shite. 🤣

As soon as I heard a 40 mph wind being blamed I thought there was maybe more to it.

Back in the 60s when the Egyptians closed the canal , to get to the middle and far east we had to go round the cape. Cant remember how much extra that added on.

Is the route round cape horn not the most dangerous in the world for cargo ships etc? As well as fuel costs to sail a few hundred thousand tonnes round it

About 9 or 10 days extra on an average speed of just over 16 knots.
3500 nautical miles extra travel.

Think it's the Cape of Good Hope.
Cape Horn is off South America.

It wiznae me that said it, it was @Hammi. 😀 The story I heard was it lost all electrical systems. Not sure about this ship but a lot of modern ships have generators making electricity providing that to electric motors for the propellers and everything else including the steering. Lose the electricity and its a dead duck.

What surprises me is there was apparently no contingency plan in place other that standing on the canal bank scratching their heid!

@Hattie it certainly gets very choppy down there. That whole latitude, the Roaring Forties, is infamous but I think the bit at the bottom of South America is accepted as being the worst.

Stop wasting your time and money on this kind of stuff @Jack . Get you and your wife on a longboat holiday in the Border county of County Leitrim, in the province of Connacht, Republic of Ireland.
Peaceful, restful with no need for military helicopters, squad cars, you describe, as the gunmen, bandits and security problems are long gone in this area now.

Wait.....hold on Jack before you book up!.....
