Scottish teams are rubbish in Europe

Was chatting to a friend who's a big Bristol City fan yesterday. I go and watch them a few times a season with him and as I've mentioned elsewhere here it's quite instructive to see them and compare with Hibs.

Over the past 20 years I'd say we've been broadly similar and in some ways they've been smaller. They probably had 1k or so less a game in crowds 10 years ago but I'd imagine a little bit more income and they signed similar kinds of players to us - indeed they got Ivan Sproule off hibs. In 2008 he played in the Championship playoff final for them.

The quality of the football has ebbed and flowed but when we've been good and they've been good I'd say there wasn't an enormous difference and I'd argue there were spells when we were quite a bit better.

City just missed out on the playoffs last season after a good campaign. But even though they haven't changed league position relatively in England they're now a world away from Hibs in resources terms and, sad to say, quality IMO. During their transfer window they've bought 26m quids worth of players. Admittedly they've brought in more from sales but even allowing for inflation and a bit of crazy football money they're in a different world to us now.

Support a Scottish team growing up in England. Gets pretty embaressing!!!!

Is there any point trying to compete anymore with the disparity in resources between Celtic (who regularly get pumped out of Europe) and the rest of European leagues. Even teams from small countries would absolutely hammer most Scottish clubs.

Is it just the money? Or is there something cultural has changed since the days of Dalgliesh etc? The 80s where really a bit before my time but when you had Aberdeen and Dundee Utd able to actually mount a serious league challenge and be successful against European competition what went wrong? Even Raith Rovers kept it respectable for a bit anyway.

Will the game finally die in Scotland as the old duopoly reasserts itself? I think the SFA wouldn't mind overmuch if all other clubs outwith Sevco and Celtic just vanished tomorrow. Maybe they would prefer 38 games just playing against each other in one long perpetual circle jerk...

I'm still a bit sore from the last result but if Scottish football can not find a way to be somewhat competitive is there a point anymore?

A wee point of order, Celtc are still in Europe, they are 'demoted' to the Europa League now. Every chance they might be pumped out Europe twice again.

I meant the same competition.
Got a lifeline after whoever beat them the round were disqualified
Then went on to get pumped out in the next round.

Unless the Huns cock up their tie they’ll face Legia in next round. Watch out for yer flags you Hun wanks.

Other countries players are just better technically and their players have less bad habits off the field. They are also coached better from a younger age. Celtic and the Rangers struggle when faced by teams who can keep the ball and attack with pace. Hardly any teams like that in Scotland.

I mind that, at least one of the ties Celtic had to play the home leg at Murrayfield. Went past on the bus and seen one smelly knock another one out outside the Murrayfield Hotel :hah:
