Rumour.

Not sure I agree with this. Cantona was the perfect pro if you listen to any of the younger United players. Trained hard, stayed behind to practice shooting and never hid during a game. The occasional red mist moment was the thing that Ferguson gave a pass on, maybe seeing some of himself as a player, maybe recognising the unique talent and leadership he brought to the club.
He was an individual, for example he’d wear trainers with his suit which wasn’t the United or Fergie way. Players would get heavily fined for this but Cantona was allowed a pass on this.

Aye, but being an individual and not having the right attitude are different things. Ferguson would give certain players more leeway to do things differently, Ronaldo and possibly Scholes on occasion when he refused to play in certain games.

Eh?? If you’re an individual in a team game then that’s the wrong attitude to have.

Unless your blessed with serious talent like the two you mentioned but let’s be clear, what Fergie allowed Cantona to get away with didn’t go unnoticed by other players in that squad.

Like most things that Fergie touched, it turned to gold but I’ll guarantee that happens in any other team across the world would explode in the managers face!

That was fergies genius. Knowing what worked and would win matches. Keane was demoted to 2nd favourite while Cantona was there. Must have been hard for some of the team but I'm sure their vast trophy cabinets made it worthwhile.
