Pokemon causing chaos

Going feckin nuts in one of my locals, one even appeared in the pub!

I'll consult one of my children before I consider joining the craze. I get about a bit so I could maybe have an edge!

im bad enough with the computer...stuff that runnin around the town to move a character or whatever it is that happens :read: bonkers

I gave it a go, the augmented reality aspect seemed interesting. I doubt I'll take it seriously, but seeing a wee monster sitting at the bus stop the other day was kind of cool.

What I have noticed on FB is lots of my friends who are parents taking their kids out on long walks to try and catch the Pokemon in their neighbourhood. A video game that gets kids outside and active, thats got to be a good thing right?

You're on to something there 2 heids. If that has been part of the thought process then it's feckin genius.

The opportunity for paedophiles is a bit worrying if kids are out and about alone

You think so???

I would hope no more than usual as I'd hope any kids would be under the usual amount of parental control. I don't really think we'll have masses of kids running about unattended all of a sudden.

I can see many more accidents, of all sorts, as all users bury their heads and fried brains deeper into their phones.

Definitely more to worry about with games that encourage a sedentary lifestyle.

I've been playing it. I think I was (ironically) just a wee bit too old to get into the trading cards when they and other linked games were first released but at 33 year old I've recently downloaded it and got out and about with the wife and some of my pals trying to "catch 'em all". Walked something like 9 miles today all over Livingston trying to find stuff, visiting landmarks etc.

For the most part the folk I've seen out and about playing it (and you can spot them a mile off; they're all looking at their phones trying to orient themselves with the map on screen and what's around them) are teenagers and folk in their twenties. I haven't seen any young kids playing it and I suspect that, unless their parents have bought them compatible smartphone (it's not currently a game that will play on every mobile due to minimum RAM and processor requiremenrs) then there won't be many.

I was having a read about the history of Pokémon and the guy who created it came upon the idea because he collected insects when he was wee. Apart from going out and collecting insects, this is probably as close to a real life version of the creator's vision of the game.

Currently the servers are all fucked because of the popularity of it - it seems that everyone in the age groups I mentioned are trying to play it so the game doesn't always work as well as it could but when it does work it really gets its hooks into you. I'm really looking forward to the time when it's fully up and running and the servers are reliable.

I think the fact that a computer game forces people to get off their arses, go outside and go walking is an incredible achievment - particularly when all other games appear to say 'hey, you don't need to go outisde and play'.

If you're an adult with kids, get out and play it. It's got the potential to be a great bonding experience for you all. The chance to get out for some fresh air, walk places and see things you maybe wouldn't normally see is, in my opinion, too good an opportunity to pass up.

I'm not really into gaming but the amount of people I know who never actually go anywhere is staggering . We live in a beautiful country yet so many have seen virtually none of it . Just maybe this game might change that a wee bit

Was out playing it with Elliot last night; what is massive is the augmented reality aspect - imagine playing cod running around Edinburgh

I (James) drops a wee lure in the beer garden 2 or 3 times a day

Bingo an extra dozen customers checking in to collect the Pokemon , fkin mental

But good for business

Did I read that the value of Nintendo increased by $8.5B due to this game?![emoji33]

I assume then that it isnt free to play or is it one of these with "in-app purchase" options?

You realise I'm not really asking you right :thumbgrin but only because I assume you are far too sensible to know the answer.

Not downloaded it/played it/or have any intention to do so.
However, one of my wife's work colleagues has - and plays it every morning as he DRIVES from the Lothians across the forth road bridge to Rosyth for work!!
It's only a matter of time until him or someone like him cause a catastrophe - it's all well n good saying the game gets folk out in the fresh air exercising, but some(most?) just won't know when to switch it off.

Isn't that true of (some) people's use of mobile phones when they're driving in general?

I guess it's like all of the other kids app games, like candy crush and dragonvalle etc. App is free, initially game is free but the further you go, the need to buy things increases.

the level of hysteria on social media-even main stream media- about this is insane.

Interestingly, Niantic, a Google offshoot who make the game have had another similar game, Ingress, with millions of users for years. No-one bothered to report on it though but probably proves the concerns over safety etc are just usual media hysteria.

Pokemon Go: Police Scotland gotta tweet 'em all - BBC News

Had grandkid around at weekend. He found some Pokemons in my house  then we found more pokemons/eggs etc in local vicinity before I realised something. first I reckon the low levels simply create a pokemon within a few Feet of where the phone is...hence they turn up in pubs/houses. After this they seem to create more within a certain area using local known landmarks, maybe from google map...as they simply re-appear a few mins after bagging original items......Sheesh I just realised I'm wasting my time thinkin and typing about a silly kids thing that is nonsense and childish :giggle:

I think you've got it. Add a gym at the likes of Easter Road and you could write yourself an app ;-)

With regard to the share price of Nintendo rocketing up and crashing on the back of this we're fucked if the bears in the stock market pits around the world are 20 something numbskulls that know nothing about the current craze other than chasing the wee fuckers and sticking billions on the back of something they played as 4 year olds!

Makes the banking crash look like err ... the system was fucked by idiots that crashed a Mondeo and got a Ferrari as compensation.
